997 Supercharged SOUND BIT or Comments

by nature, the TPC kit is louder. It uses a Eaton supercharger, same one you would see like on a Jag, Benz, or Ford. OEM's use this supercharger because of its performance and longevity. The eaton sc makes more boost early where a vortech or the VF Engineering kit builds boost like a turbocharger. So with the TPC, you make the 5-6psi at the lowest RPM around 2500 where the VF/EVO kit does not make max boost till later. The benefits of the TPC kit will outweigh the other with Torque and HP. They have many new benefits as year after year the kits are enhanced. Silicon boost tubes, better air to water intercoolers, piggyback ecu solutions and more.
At the end of the day, do your research, and choose what you want!

I only barely hear it at low speed when I am coasting. It is a slight whrrrr instead of a high pitched whine. I have driven a TPC kit hard and I can tell you it puts out more power at low RPM but the two are evenly matched when the Vortech hits boost at about 4800 RPM. But I just can't stand the whine. It permeates the cockpit. It is very un-Porsche like.

Just had to say that I had a photo taken of mine at the same time. Looks like they were seperated at birth!
Peace out.

On a scale from 1 to 10
1. The "Winding noise" how bad is it? Can you really hear inside/outside?
I've had my 997S Evo kit under two different exhaust system configurations. The exhaust configuration makes a big difference not only to overall engine sound, but also apparently to the supercharger whine. While my Evo headers, stock cats and Fabspeed mufflers were installed, the whine was barely noticable at idle and non-existent under acceleration. The only time one could really get a clear bead on the whine was when the engine bay was open. If one wanted a very quiet system, this was certainly one configuration for it.
Since my Europipe exhaust system was installed, the sounds are quite different. This complete system is free flowing, including the 100 cell cats. The engine sounds much better overall IMHO, and the supercharger whine is more pronounced but not obnoxious. I can hear the whine at idle and under low-moderate acceleration. At lower RPMs the supercharger sounds a lot like a jet airplane and at higher RPMs the whine reaches a high pitch that probably only your dog would hear. I like a little whine with my cheese, so the more noticeable, but not overwhelming, sound was welcome. A Boxster owner approached me the other day at a gas station and asked if I had a turbo or supercharger installed because he could hear the distinct whine when I pulled in. A non-Porsche owner would probably not have noticed it.
On a scale from 1 to 10.
2. The excitment vs. a 997TT (stock) if you drove both?
I have never driven a 996TT or 997TT so I can't provide a comparison. Others have provided good experienced opinions.
On a scale from 1 to 10
3. The overall dependability of it / Have you had a MAJOR issues mechanically since you have installed one and please explain.
I experienced an intermediate shaft failure after about 500-1000 miles from the SC kit's first installation. I had two dealerships willing to replace the engine under warranty despite the kit. One dealership told me this failure was going to happen regardless of the kit because it was a known design defect in the engine. I had to take the majority of the kit off before the dealership would replace the engine and just recently had it re-installed after properly breaking in the new engine. All opinions agree that the SC kit did not cause this failure, but the coincidence still makes me nervous.
I now have nearly 700 miles posted on the new supercharged engine and it is working flawlessly. After going through three ECU programs and an improved set of fuel injectors (all provided under the kit warranty) the car exhibits exemplary civility at low RPM and speeds, and a very predictable, linear response as the RPMs rise. Evo's kit is so properly matched to the engine and overall character of the car that it feels almost stock.
Another neat benefit of the kit is exceptional fuel mileage. At steady highway speeds I've experienced economy as high at 36 mpg over long drives. How many ~500 HP cars drive this civily, this quickly and have this kind of fuel economy? By my calculations, the kit will pay for itself after I drive 700,000 miles.
