I have it - considering the shady mf'ers around the DC area, it's a must. It is also a big help with your insurance...

 

I thought with PCM your car is trackable through GPS by Porsche? I know Mercedes does...

 

Had it on my '04 NSX...waste of money! They installed it out of view, and then I asked the installer how do I know you've actually installed it, he replied "I'm not at liberty to tell you in case someone carjacks you." Quite honesty, if someone stole my car, I would not want the car back.

 

Even if it works 100% as it should, it relies on your local police to do something. I have a saying, don’t trust anyone but yourself. There are many other tracking systems out there that you can check. Mercedes has a system I know of for sure that allows the owner to track the car, but I’ve heard of people getting screwed when they need it most. Once again, who do you trust? If you look around you can find a system out there that will allow you to sit at your computer and track the car. Find one that offers a battery backup so that there is no way to disable it. I’ve been in situations where a system like this comes in handy. The police many times won’t show up most times even if you tell them where your car is. This is when you do things jersey style.

I have never thought of lojack as an option. That scenario you said where the punk wouldn’t tell you were its at would have infuriated me. I would have watched them put it in, or said no deal. It gets you a discount on your insurance but if you want the car back your going to have to be the proactive one.

 

Good idea to have it but if the cops don't spot it or you got crooked cops around then it's useless. I'd look into something else. I use my SUV when I go into the hood.

Some cars are irreplaceable. If you track it down soon enough they wont have time to do anything, other then get a pipe wench to the face. Most people that steel high-end cars, you could never guess they were thieves, and aren’t going to put up a fight. It all depends on the area though. From my experiences the best way to deal with a stolen car, is to not get yourself or your belongings into areas or situations where they may be taken. I have however had to deal with those situations before.

I have LoJack with the Early Response Warning device - which I cannot recommend enough. If the car is moved without the special key fob in it, I receive a SMS, page, and phone calls to my home and mobile phone within about 5 minutes (I've tested it a few times to make sure it works).

The beauty of this is that you know within 5 minutes if your car has been stolen thus the recovery of the car is much mush faster than with a standard LoJack system.

I've had a car stolen once before and I can tell you that your insurance will pay you squat.

 

I had a vehicle stolen once, and they paid 90% of the original sticker value.

 

Your insurance better pay what the policy says, which is usually the market value of the vehicle when it was stolen. That said, the discount from insurance doesn't come close to covering the cost of the system and the recurring fees, so unless you can afford to burn the money you are usually better off just putting that cash into a money-market account that draws interest and use that accumulated cash plus an eventual insurance payout to buy a new car if its ever stolen.
