Can you upgrade manual rearview mirror to OEM auto dimming?

I would really like to upgrade my rearview mirror to an auto dimming version (OEM if possible). At night, with the top down, I have to choose between headlights in my rearview or streetlamps from above when the mirror is flipped... it has been pretty nice here the past few days and I had forgotten about how frustrating this is.

Have any of you had this upgrade done or could you provide some suggestions?

I remember my dealer suggesting this option because he said it was near-impossible to do after the fact. Anything is possible with the right amount of money. Best bet - call your dealer and ask him for a quote.

996 has a retrofit kit but I am not succesful with the 997 so far. The options released for 996 is mostly not available for 997 yet.

I also noticed that you can purchase a TEQUIPMENT kit for 996 and the Boxster; given that the 997 isn't exactly brand new any longer I am hopeful that it won't be long before we have an OEM upgrade option as well. I will be at my dealer tomorrow, maybe the service manager can provide us with some insight as well.

Picked up my car from the dealer yesterday and my question regarding an OEM upgrade to autodimming rearview mirror is still a Porsche mystery. The service manager is continuing "research" on the topic and promised to touch base later this week... I'll keep you posted with any updates.

Don't believe there to be a retrofit kit available from Porsche, nothings imposssible tho. Another thought I've seen a radar detector integrated into the review mirror that had and auto dim feature and fooled me for factory at first glance.

Don't forget from the factory it also comes with dimming side view mirrors.

I did not get any results either, it is very frustrating. Why do the retrofit for 996 but not for 997. If there is wiring it should not be a problem.

i have a feeling maybe porsche did not leave the wiring in? if it was pre-wired, i'd image it should be fairly simple. most BMWs have a lot of options prewired so it is quite easy for DIY.

Does it even work? I have it enabled on my 997 (factory option), but I'm not seeing much of a difference at all!

I did it to my 996 40th anniversary. Actually it was quite easy. Bought the rear view mirror from Gert and install only required a power line which I think was already prewired or we took it from the dome light. The side mirrors are more involved, which I did not do, but the rear view was a pop and plug.

It basically needs power and to make sure the ball socket is the same size. I don't see why the 996 part would not work on the 997. Maybe your dealer would let you order it and you could see whether it is the same size socket, that is the only knockout factor. You can get power.

Wow, I really notice it - it is one of my favorite options that came with my car. (I've never had it before). I really like that it dims all three mirrors. My morning commute is heavy traffic - most of which is SUV and pickup trucks with headlights right at 911 mirror height.

Keep in mind that it does not dim the mirrors until the sensor "sees" headlights behind you? Is the little green LED lit up (indicating the feature is active)? Mine turn a very noticable dark purple/gunmetal color when there are headlights behind me. I think your headlights have to be on too to activate the feature. If nothing is happening you might want to get it checked out.
