997s Poor Reliability?
We live in AR, nowhere near any exotic car dealers, and that is exactly why we bought a porsche and not an italian car. We have had the 997s for a year now and nothing has gone wrong, haven't been back to the dealer since the day we drove it off the lot. The first message on the display involving service is the annual service that needs to be done this month, but that happens in even the most "reliable" cars.
friend of mine works there, they are around the corner. bunch of communists. further they recommend cars and following year dont' they will give you an unreliable if they don't like the way the sun visor flips up. if its a honda it's perfect.
I read that too, and was confused... so I have a few theories: First, people who buy Porsches (and other performance cars) have high standards. Compared to people who buy Hondas, Porsche owners are knowlegeable and picky (****!) with their cars. In addition, if they subscribe to CR (like me), then they have even higher standards. Therefore, they are more likely to report certain problems with Porsches than other drivers... CR just tallies the surveys then puts a grade on them. There is no subjectivity included in the reliability report.
Another theory is that Porsches are finely tuned and complex vehicles with many parts that are expected to work perfectly. Therefore, more risk of part malfunction.
I've stated before, just because a lot of Porsche owners report problems to CR doesn't mean it shouldn't be recommended. On the other hand, it's probably just as well. I'd hate to see Porsche go the way of M-B and start producing low-end crap cars.

i really wish i could be happy driving around in a Ford Tempo, but for the life of me, i just can't do it.
My first 997 blew a coolant line which was dramatic but not damaging to the engine. A one-off problem as I've heard no one else suffer from this.
My second (and current) 997 has had a small problem with the soft top and the driver's side rear window that won't go up all the way when putting the softtop up. An easy fix that will be dealt with tomorrow when the car gets its first service and has the summer tires put back on.

LMs = SO SICK!! (sorry, OT)
Only consistent gripe I have is that I still trigger an engine fault if I lean on the driver side headlight cover when I detail the car. This was well disecribed as a forward control until problem with early models and supposedly fixed by the time my July 2005 car was produced. Its a quick fix with the PIWIS computer, but still a pain in the ****. Everything else has been incredibly bullet proof.
