who modifies their car and why?

I'm new to this terrific forum and never realized that it seems most of the members who own porsches do some sort of modifications. I have had 12 porsches the last 38 years and still do no know what some of you are talking about.
I did 3 modifications over the years. I put roll bars on a earlier targa carrera and had a TT lowered. I also bought a TT with tubi mufflers (I think). The roll bar I never used since I never got to the track. The lowered twin turbo was terrible since I constantly scrapped, and the tubi mufflers (if that is the correct term) was so loud I could not think and the thing kept screwing up the cars computers and putting some red light on which said ' take immediately to dearler". My wife hated the sound also. Took that darn muffler system off.
After being on this foum for 3 months I feel like I am the only porsch owner who drives what came with the car. Also feel like I am doing something wrong not doing something.
What is a flash kit by the way. Google has only stuff related to photography. I really feel stupid.
This abbreviation thing has found it's way into medicine also. I have been doing imaging procedures for over 40 years and sometimes have to call the floors to get the nurses to tell me what they are looking far as I have no idea what some of the medical abbreviations mean.

First I love Porsche more than any car!
that`s my first Porsche (not in the family) is a 997S 2007
and I always modified my cars because I dont like to have the same Porsche or any car that other person on the street
is different when you use your car and see that is unique!
now I have exhaust...cats...headers...Gemballa springs and in 1 week Evoms SC

drjay2,

The reason I did my mods is because I truly created the car I wanted. As this is my first Porsche, I wanted to learn as much about the car as possible. Some of the mods I did myself, and others I watched professionals do. In any case, I am learning as I create. Don't feel bad that you never (or only slightly) modified your Porsches over the years. It is all about driving and enjoying the vehicle you have. For me, it is the art of modification that I enjoy.

To make it individual, your own. It's not a good feeling to pull up to the same car at the stoplight and not notice a difference.

Whats up Doc?

No worries, we've all at one point been new to this modification, tuning thing. I've been part of this forum a few years, and there's still so much to read about and learn in regards to porsches and aftermarket modifications. Every year there are new products coming out from several aftermarket companies.

Some people tune their cars for aesthtics and some for performance and some for both. However, I think that the vast majority of porsche owners keep them stock. I would say that "tuners, modders" are a small minority in relation to the whole porsche community. It's just that this forum in particular has many knowledgeable enthusiasts that want to change and set their cars apart by modifying them. Some porsche "nutts" here have tuned the 996TT upto 1000 hp and gotten results like a 1/4 mile run in 10 secs and I even read about a 9 sec car. Pretty remarkable considering how the car performs out of the factory.

If you stick around at 6speed for a while, you'll find a wealth of information and for the most part very friendly people that will answer all your questions. Look at the banners to your right. Those are 6 speed members as well as forum sponsors. If you'd like, this could be your onestop shopping place for any of your porsche needs.

Even if you might be the oldest forum member, you're still young enough to modify your porsche. Once you get started, my guess is that you'll never outgrow your needs to modify. Its just about modifying your car to what suits you. I guess it's like a herpes virus, it'll stay with you forever.

Besides judging by you distinguished list of previously owned porsches, you probably know more about porsches and its history than most people here. I have only had 2 p-cars so far. I don't think there will ever be 12 notches in my belt.

-Peter

i was driving in Bellevue the other day just after we left the Porsche dealership (a friend ordered a new car) and while I was there I saw 3 dark gray C2 and C4.. I was leaving and saw the same car, and said to my friend..there goes that same dealer car again on a test drive (my friend test drove that car earlier in the week but didn't like it enough), but it was a different car, then 4 cars back, same color 997..and again a personal car not the dealers

So that is why so many people here tune their cars or modify them in some way... make them different and their own. Just like when you build your home.. YOU choose colors. materials, trim and furniture.. too bad we can't do that all the way with the Porsches, but the aftermarket world allows us to do just that!

Oh man... doc, you shouldn't have sold your 1996 TT

The reason why I tune my car (this is the first car I tuned) is because no car is perfectly what I want, but my P-car comes close.

For me tuning a car is exactly that, doing little mods to get the car exactly how you like it, whether it is how the car looks, sounds, or drives.

The largest bang for your buck is definitely intake, exhaust, and Flash/GIAC which is a computer program remap of your engine to take advantage of the intake and exhaust, and in return give you more power.

Short shift kit is also very helpful, and eliminates the feeling of rowing a boat when you are going through the gears.

There is a possibility that engine tuning may void the warranty. This is very dealer based as our local dealers in the SF peninsula are very supportive of P-car owners who also tune their car, and most of their warranty repairs have been complete with no fuss. I also believe there have been several laws that force the dealer to prove the part in question broke because of the engine modification before they can deny claim.

As for the engine flash/GIAC engine software reprogramming, it is done just by the tuner plugging a wire into the diagnostic port and all the upgrade is done through there via a specific VIN # code your car provides.

Benefits of this type of tuning is the upgrade is very specific to your engine, there is nothing added or deleted to the computer (no visual indication that a flash is done), plus the "upload count" remains at 1, meaning the computer the dealer has has no idea the software is upgraded either. In short, the actual ECU/computer program upgrade is masked from the dealer. This means they will never know you upgraded the engine program unless you tell them.

Hope this helps.

mod or not

Let me give you my history

94 sl upgraded the stock to 18" lorinsers and eibach springs- NY potholes had me bend 3 front rims mstake 1.

99 996 stock beautiful car

02 c4s upgraded to fabspeed exhaust- removed 800 miles later the drone was intolerable.

05 cay tt- was convinced to try fabs again, sound was great but the vibration created by switching loosened the welds on the cross members on more proximal pipes created the most annoying rattle that was a management issue

06 c2s stock and staying that way, cosmetically only adding tint and hard
wire v1

and i create my own abbreviations to distract the radiologist from reading the wall street journmal while at "work"

I like to keep everything stock, except adding the necessary functional electronics:

1. iPod/USB drive connection
2. V1 radar detector hardwire
3. LPP Laser Park Pro laser jammer
4. door lock chime & passenger's window one touch (mod4car)
