NAV-TV Bluetooth Adapter for 997

I have just had a "Release Candidate" prototype Bluetooth adapter from NAV-TV installed in my 07 C2S. It connects into the MOST ring just as do the NAV-TV iPod adapter and Sirius satellite radio adapter that I previously had installed. The Bluetooth adapter allows control of a Bluetooth cell phone via the PCM's buttons and knobs, including initiating and answering calls using the "lift handset" button at the upper left of the PCM, hanging up via the "end call" button just to the right of that, dialing calls via the PCM numeric keypad, syncing the cell phone's phonebook such that it is accessible through the PCM, making calls from the synced phonebook, displaying incoming caller information on the PCM screen, muting the radio or CD during calls, etc. Call quality is excellent, as is the sound through the car's main speaker system.

The only flaw I have found with my adapter's software version is that it doesn't sync the cell phone's entire phonebook, just the first 60 or so entries. NAV-TV has just shipped me an updated adapter based on my feedback which should correct this one issue. I have paired both an iPhone and a Blackberry 8700 with the NAV-TV adapter with no other issues than the partial phonebook transfer. When I get the new adapter installed next week, I'll post whether or not it has cured this problem.

NAV-TV tells me the final version of the adapter should be ready for formal release through retail channels within the next month.

I had my Bluetooth adapter, as well as my satellite radio adapter and iPod adapter, installed by Custom Car Stereo in Houston, who did their usual excellent job. The Bluetooth adapter installation took well less than an hour.

I posted this same information over at Rennlist but thought it might also be of interest here. Glad to try to answer any questions.

One of the major complaints of the Dension bluetooth kit is the problem with microphone placement and volume. Have you experienced any similar problems with sound volume using the Nav-TV kit?

How much does the Ipod and Bluetooth kit cost? thanks

No problems at all with volume. My microphone is mounted to the driver's side of the panel above the rearview mirror that houses the Homelink buttons, reading lights, etc.

I'll have to double-check how much my iPod adapter was when I get home from my weekend trip. The Bluetooth adapter I have is a prototype piece and as such the amount I paid for it ($490 plus installation) is less than it is going to retail for, according to the Nav-TV guy from whom I bought it directly. How much less I don't know.

spyder997s 09-28-2007 05:57 PM

The interface sounds much better than the Dension since you can use the numerical buttons to dial on the PCM and transfer contacts into the phone book. Do you know if the microphone is noise-cancelling?

When you called someone from your car via bluetooth, what was their feedback to you regarding sound quality?

Thanks,

Mister PINK 09-28-2007 07:50 PM

this is very exciting please post some screen and install photos please.

I don't know whether the microphone is noise cancelling, but I'll try to find out. I've had no complaints about sound quality from people I've called, but I'll make a point to ask some people to give me their specific evaluations of that.

I'm out of town this weekend, but I'll try to post some pictures of what the PCM screens look like when I get home.

this sounds great! keep us posted.

As promised, some screen shots. Note that Nav-TV's name for the Bluetooth adapter is"Tooki". It's searching because my cell carrier's signal is not very strong in my garage.

Mister PINK 09-30-2007 04:04 PM

So to confirm you are actually able to dial using the numbers next to the screen? where did you porsche the kit?

Thanks.

Yes. You can directly dial using the numeric keypad on the left side of the PCM. By "porsche the kit", I assume you mean where did I purchase it (although I like the idea of porsche and purchase being synonymous). I got the adapter directly from NaV-TV after having a telephone conversation with the head of Nav-TV after an exchange of emails. He says that the final version should be released through their retail distribution outlets within a month.

jfr0317 09-30-2007 05:08 PM

Just for clarification, I have no affiliation with Nav-TV, and I am not receiving any compensation for posting about the "Tooki" Bluetooth adapter. I'm just a Porsche buff who is also a gadget geek.

Maison 09-30-2007 05:30 PM

Looks like a very good alternative other than the Dension. Will it do dual duties, Ipod and Bluetooth, like the Dension? If so, I'm there!!

No, it takes a separate (but compatible) iPod adapter to go along with the Bluetooth adapter. I have both as well as the Nav-TV Sirius Satellite Radio adapter. Other than the cost of having to buy three adapters, it works great, just as if they were factory options. With respect to the Dension, doesn't it require both the Gateway 500 for the iPod as well as a separate Bluetooth add-on that plugs into the Gateway 500? I think the difference (other than user interface and functionality) is that the Nav-TV devices all each hook directly into the MOST fiber optic ring whereas the Dension Gateway 500 hooks into the MOST ring, and the Dension Bluetooth Adapter then plugs into the Gateway 500.

larrytrk 09-30-2007 06:32 PM

I wonder how it is able to interface with the PCM , and preserve all the PCM phone functions , by just entering the FIOS loop? I thought the 666 option required a separate module that had to be installed in the PCM, not merely placed in the FIOS loop?

I would suggest you pose that question to Nav-TV via their "Contact Us" link on their website. I would guess that the adapter has the appropriate logic to communicate with the PCM in much the same manner as the iPod adapter and satellite radio adapters do. The Dension and Nav-TV iPod adapters both seem to utilize the PCM's logic for CD changers, and the Nav-TV satellite radio adapter similarly emulates the factory satellite radio module of the Cayenne to interface with the PCM, so I suppose it is doing something similar with the telephone function.

spyder997s 09-30-2007 09:04 PM

jfr0317,

Thanks for posting the pics and sharing this with us. I think this bluetooth user interface is by far very superior to the Dension product and it even uses the PCM phone functions to boot!

The screenshots you provided look great and I'm looking forward to your future
updates regarding sound quality and long term use.

I'm curious as to the total cost of your current set up. Can you share here or PM me the general amount?

Also, does Nav-tv function USB port Hard drives (e.g. for updates and mp3 files)?

Thanks,

Chuck

The PCM radio has support for an external phone module, which in this case is the factory GSM unit. the slot in the PCM radio accepts a SIM card and the radio transfers the SIM content to the phone module via the MOST link.
TOOKI emulates a factory phone module. It is a valid PHONE node on the MOST network, hence as far as the radio is concerned, it sees the TOOKI as a phone module.
Therefore, almost all functions originally supported by the factory phone module are supported by the NAV-TV TOOKI.
Certain functions, mainly SIM related, are not working. SMS functions are limited to select carriers, so for example SMS with Verizon and Sprint is not supported.

spyder997s 09-30-2007 09:12 PM

So when can we buy this? Do you guys need another beta-tester? :D

I would say release is scheduled for late October.

I don't want to repeat our last mistake, which was releasing a product (iPod interface...) too early. I must admit, it took quite a few revisions to get it right.
The biggest mistake was not to incorporate some sort of user-update feature.

This time, We took the time to validate the product in Germany and in the US, and the last bugs are being worked out.

The best part is that once released, there would never be replacements unless the hardware fails (extremely rare !)

TOOKI will have the capability of being upgraded (firmware update) via a bluetooth-enabled laptop, both for new phone compatibility and MOST software updates.

Maison 09-30-2007 09:31 PM

What's the MSRP?

Maison,
I am not a sponsor yet, I am waiting for an answer from Admin about sponsoring.

I would rather not discuss prices at this point until:
1. I register as a sponsor, therefore not violating forums rules, or:
2. Official prices are determined and released via the normal channels.

In any case, it would be much cheaper than the factory GSM kit (trust me, I have purchased such a kit for our R&D !!! big $$$ hilarious)

spyder997s 10-01-2007 12:13 AM

What other features does nav-tv have?

I know that an iPod adapter is available. I'd look forward to the following features on PCM also:

-Rear-view camera
-TV/DVD playback capability
-USB/Hard drive mp3 playback

Are any of these in development or already available?

My installer charged me $150 to install the Nav-TV Bluetooth adapter. It took less than 45 minutes.

See NAV-TV's responses to your other questions.

I will continue to post my impressions as I use the device more. I am getting an updated unit this week that is supposed to correct a couple of minor glitches that showed up with my initial unit. NAV-TV was very responsive to my feedback, quickly made changes to address the glitches I found, and shipped me a revised unit the next day after we spoke. The main glitch was that only about the first 60 or so entries from my phonebook were being synced to the PCM. With this addressed, it should be very close to being ready for prime time.

Seems to be a giant leap forward....

So far, so good. The updated unit should arrive tomorrow, and I will try to get it installed Thursday. It is supposed to incorporate fixes for every issue I have passed on to NAV-TV, so I'm hopeful that I'll be all set.

The ability to accommodate future updates via a Bluetooth-connected laptop is very cool. I have a Parrot CK3100 Bluetooth adapter in my truck which allows such a way to update, and it works great. I had to do the most recent update to get it to work properly with my iPhone. This ability on the Nav-TV Bluettoth adapter will be very beneficial.

Yes. See NAV-TV's post above where he explains:

"TOOKI emulates a factory phone module. It is a valid PHONE node on the MOST network, hence as far as the radio is concerned, it sees the TOOKI as a phone module.

In simpler terms, I do not have the factory phone option, and my Nav-TV Bluetooth adapter (Tooki) works.:)

larrytrk 10-03-2007 06:47 AM

I would like more info on compatibility with PCM, as a stand alone bluetooth option with my Dension i-pod unit.
Also, did you mean it was not compatible with Sprint at all, or just certain functions did not work with that service? eg. what is SMS?

NAV-TV is better qualified than I am to answer your questions, but let me take a stab at answering what I do know. SMS is Short Message Service also known as text message. There is a button on the row of buttons below the PCM screen labeled SMS. I think NAV-TV is saying that SMS functionality with his unit is dependent on cellular carrier support, and that SMS via Verizon and Sprint is not supported. That may have something to do with the fact that Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology, while AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM, which also uses a SIM (Subscriber Information Module) card. Since the factory built-in phone option also uses GSM, the Nav-TV module's emulation may provide more functionality with a GSM carrier's phone.

As for using the Nav-TV Bluetooth module along with a Dension iPod adapter, I would think that it would still work since the Nav-TV Bluetooth adapter connects directly via the MOST fiber optic ring. Therefore, adding another MOST device to the ring should be no different from already documented installations in which people have added the Cayenne satellite radio alongside a Dension or Nav-TV iPod adapter.

nerual 10-03-2007 07:47 AM

I need one of these as soon as it comes out!

Mister PINK 10-07-2007 05:53 PM

any update on cost and timing?

Piper 10-07-2007 10:16 PM

Excuse my ignorance on this topic, but with the iPod adapter, do you have some type holder for the iPod and just a plugin like the iPod dock? Also, does this same adapter work for the iPod within the iPhone? iPhone being my main concern, obviously the bluetooth adapter is working fine but how about the iPod within the iPhone and what about the quality of sound when songs play from iPhone/iPod?

jfr0317 10-08-2007 04:23 AM

I had my iPod adapter installed such that the end of the cable with the standard iPod connector is in the center console compartment. This end of the cable plugs into an iPod or iPhone. My iPhone works fine this way, and sound quality is good. The iPod functions of the iPhone are controlled via the PCM buttons and knob. See this link for how it is controlled:

If you don't have the bluetooth adapter, what happens when a call comes in and the iPhone is plugged in playing music? Does imitate normal phone function, music fade out and phone ring come through. Do you just have to unplug and answer, unless wearing bluetooth headset I assume?

I haven't tried that because all of my vehicles have Bluetooth phone capability, but I assume what you have described would be correct. I'll try turning off the Bluetooth on the iPhone and then see what happens when I receive a call while playing music from the iPhone through the iPod adapter. I'm guessing you wouldn't even have to unplug the iPhone from the adapter to be able to answer it if you had a long enough cable.

Long cable would make this situation a little easier if one did not have the the bluetooth adapter or headset, but really just curious what happens when call comes in while playing songs through iPhone. Surely it shuts down music in order to notify of call coming in. One other test for the iPhone-what about when silent switch happens to be pressed down? Obviously you wouldn't want it to be this way, but sometimes I forget I have it set to silent.

As long as it stops the music from playing, wouldn't that let you know to check the phone?

I tried it out with my iPhone's Bluetooth turned off and the iPhone connected to the iPod adapter, and the music stopped when the iPhone received a call. I had the iPhone in vibrate mode, and the iPhone vibrated when the call came in.

JBONDOx 10-08-2007 05:34 PM

I have done 4 of the tookie's already, ranging from Cayenne to Sportscar, further the last one I did in a Cayenne; I did a rear camera interface, Sirius Satellite, iPod interface, Park Assist sensors, and the Bluetooth. Everything works great, including the iPhone when plugged into the iPod dock of NavTv. There is a few concerns regarding all the phones out there and pairing with the unit. I did try 10 different phones that i had access to, and the only one that gave me issues was a LG Verizon model. now the problem that I was having was downloading the address book, but I had no time to go through the setup features because the owner of the vehicle needed his vehicle back. This is a huge step for NavTV, and will put thyem on the map for sure as being one of the industry greats, I remember calling up to them years ago and when they answered they would yell the questions to someone else. They have came a very long way

I will suggest to anyone that has this unit or is getting it installed, I believe it will be around $999.99 vs the factory SIM deal $1600, to get the steering wheel with the controls on it for the sports cars... it makes life so much more simpler. And I am sure it is pricey though.

Further, the question about back up camera, video, well I have been doing that already for a few years and yes i have done it on the new PCM's. As for the MP3 files, I don't see that being huge at all, especially with the iPod, that is the way of the future... I know Microsoft had theirs, but I only heard the name a few days after it was released and haven't heard it since... just iPod. I had someone call me up from here talking about another unit for the iPod, and they stated theirs retains the changer. I can honestly say that i live in a backwoods, poor (rated #1 3 years now) metropolitan area, and changers are going bye bye, plus the inconvenience of getting out and fumbling with a magazine?

i will not say that the iPod is the best sounding, but compared to a CD on a poor factory Bose sounding sound system (Porsche in general) one can't tell the difference in quality as long as the download was done correct.

Well this is my first post, I will post more later
