Interesting drive today
I was invited by the local McLaren dealer to drive the new 650s spider today. The one I drove was the volcano yellow.
I am 6'2" tall and was surprised at how comfortable I was once seated. This car is a very serious automobile. The suspension is extremely comfortable for a chassis that is so tight when you need it to me. Almost no dive under 75-0 breaking and acceleration is awesome but nothing that different than the tts from what I saw today. The car drives more exotic than the tts.
I has a very low seating position but comfortable. Loved the location and side of the steering wheel. The paddles are perfectly placed. I found it to be very driveable on the side streets at low speeds . Did not get it on the parkway but managed some 20-60 pulls followed by extreme breaking activating the air brake. The exhaust is loud enough to be music to your ears, and loud enough to let you know your driving something special but not disruptive.
The pro drivers took us out, and then turned to cars over to us for 30 minutes of driving pleasure.
I think McLaren has produced a fine super exotic sports car that is very drive able. The biggest barrier to entry is the price tag of 328k. For me it's just not a reality. They have a special lease of $4,500 month for 18 months with 9k down.
For me the only issue besides price is the egress. Once or twice a day fine, running errands it might become a chore. Sounds funny but I guess I'm getting old. Not sure if the door would be a problem in my garage or not but I will worry about that if and when the time comes.
They put on a great event, could not have been nicer. I would have appreciated a closed course where I could have put the car thru some heavier performance testing but that was not in the cards.
