Posted this in the wrong forum.

Generally speaking with modern cars if the remote (key?) is changed the key electronics has to be "introduced" to the car's security system. Almost certainly this has to be handled at the dealer although a well-equipped indy shop can probably handle this.

When one presses a button on the remote to lock or unlock the car the key transmits a radio signal with its ID. If the security module doesn't have this ID in its non-volatile memory it won't act upon the signal.

(The key may still be able to start the engine, though, if the key uses an RFID pill. The pill can be moved from the old key to the new key and when the new key is used to start the engine the RFID pill when requested sends over its ID and the security system recognizes the ID and allows the engine to start.)
