Coil Packs

Anyone else had cracked coils. I have had two 2009 997.1 TT and when I changed the plugs on both cars, for tune, one at 21k and one at 27k all the coils were cracked and a few were arching. I don't understand why they would be cracked. The dealership even replaced the plugs about 3k miles before I bought it and they missed the cracked coils. Do you think people even look/inspect coil packs when they replace plugs? When I ordered new packs this time Porsche had a new part number and the coil packs are thicker with the exception of the 6th cylinder, I think, and it was smaller to allow a bracket to fit. I find the cracked coil packs to be strange, maybe even manufacture defect.?

VERY common issue.

The coils were updated a couple times.

My car had 5 of the 6 coils cracked at 20,000 miles. One was cracked in 2-3 places.

The correct updated coils for 997's are a Beru 997 602 104-02 The bosses for the bolts that hold them in are the same depth as the coil-pack, requiring longer 10mm bolts. Those longer bolts will come with the updated coils.

The original coil part number ended in -107-00 I believe. I tried ordering them from 2-3 places (other than Suncoast),.. and each time I got something that wasn't correct. 996 Turbo coils,.. updated 996 turbo ones,... etc, etc. Then I ordered them from Suncoast,.. and got the correct ones.

Yeah the new ones are bigger with the exception of number 6. I went through all of the old ones and they were all cracked and one was even arching. All new now though.

Interesting. I have the EVOMS high discharge coils which were changed around 16,000 miles. The car has 32,000 miles now 8 years later and they seem to be working very well without any issues. I haven't visually inspected them in while though.
