914-6 Shifting Issues

What if any difficulties are encountered in shifting the stock transmission on the 914-6? Including upshifting, downshifting and specifically which gears were problematic?

OK, but my question is for anyone with experience with shifting in the 914-6... Were there any problems with shifting? If so, which gears?

My - 6 no issues with the tail shifter. If you want to AX I'd suggest up update to side shifter

Lots of things can lead to poor shifting on 914 tranmissions. Is this an original 914-6 or a 6 conversion? Check the linkage - sometimes bushings get worn and leave some play. Is clutch fully disengaging? Those are two non-transmission issues that sometimes make the car very difficult to shift. If its a conversion car you might want to see how the linkage was modified. I have seen some real hack jobs.

If its a transmission problem. 1st gear is a common gear to lose in a 901 transmission.

It really depends on what you are doing. Do you have a problem you are trying to solve? Or are you looking for a problem on a car to see if it is ok? On the tail shifters, they are kind of sloppy like a hooker, but that can be fixed up a bit with a bushing kit and clutch adjustment. Or, you can change to a side shifter but not a good idea if you are trying to keep one orriginal. Mine is a tail shift with a good bushing kit in it and it workd fine, but it's no Mazda Miata!

No real problems shifting, but the tails shifters are vague and sloppy like a hooker. Are you trouble shooting a problem on your car, or looking for problems on a car you want to purchase? You have two basic options to help the shifting feel out, a good bushing kit and clutch adjustment, or switch it ovet to a side shifter. If you are trying to keep it stock, go for the bushing kit. Mine has new bushings and shifts just fine, but it's no Mazda Miata!
