AM V8 Driving

I'll start off apologizing if this question has been asked before. I tried searching with no results. My AM is an 09 and I picked it up new last week. When driving your AMV8, do you notice a knocking on your steering wheel, like a force feedback on PS3 controllers? I asked the dealership and the sales person said that it is normal. He mentioned that Top Gear mentioned this with their review.

The only "knock" I've had on the steering wheel is when going over a pretty serious bump at highway speeds. Outside of that, no such thing. This is on an 09.

I haven't noticed this myself. Also, I'm pretty sure Top Gear hasn't mentioned this in regard to the Vantage (I've watched the Vantage eps many times). Maybe they said something similar in regard to the other AMs.

Yes, this is what I'm referring to. Yeah, it is like a knocking sound from the steering wheel when hitting some bumps. I guess this is normal then. I'm surprised nobody talked about this. I totally thought it was abnormal.

There where two separate issues on this:
1) Airbag rattling inside the steering wheel (case by case, I've read some where changed by dealers)
2) Rattle in the steering column on very rough roads. (no solution that I know of - I get the same in my car over bad potholes)

I have a brand new 09 as well and I haven't experienced this. I would start by making sure the tires are inflated properly and have the alignment checked. Talk to the service dept, they will probably be more helpful than the sales team.

I'm glad to know the rattle (knocking, clicking) in the steering column is normal. I'll have to check to see if the airbag is rattling. Thanks for your help. Gotta get all these warranty or questions out of the way so I can enjoy the car. Seems like there is some sort of rattle in every car.

The tires are inflated properly. I have this thing with tire pressure. I brought a tire gauge to the dealership at pickup to make sure the tire pressure was correct before driving off. It was over inflated, of course. The alignment should be fine, drives straight.

The fact that your car drives straight doesn't mean the alignment is good. A car with too much toe, for example, could feel strange in corners yet drive straight. It is probably not the problem but I think it is still worth a shot. I guess you want the power steering inspected so you might as well ask them to check the alignment.

After reading a couple of answers, I took out the AM receipts box and shuffled through some paperwork. It seems that every time the car went in for service or recall, a wheel alignment was also done. On the last recall repair, I called to find out the status and I was told that the mechanic is performing an alignment. Am I the only one getting alignments left and right??????

the air bag rattle is a common issue, and also easy to remedy, if when placing your thumbs underneath the air bag and you can easily move it up in reference to the steering wheel and drops when released the chances are this will be your rattle, the very complex fix to this is fitting double sided foam strips the same as used to fit number plates is used betwen the airbag and steering wheel at three points which is quite evident once the airbag is removed, not a diy fix as airbags include an explosive charge so great care needs to be taken,
