can anyone tell me if it's normal for my car to have a strange winding noise coming from the transmission that goes away after about 10 minutes when the car is warmed up? it's not metallic sounding. it's not even that loud, but it's obvious. when i start my car in the morining, i let it warm up for about 5-10 minutes until my temp guage is dead center. then i tread slowly for about 5 minutes as i first start driving. it's during this first 5 minutes of driving that i hear this noise. it happens on the top end of the gear. it doesn't appear when the car is not being pushed. but then it completely goes away when it's nice and hot? do i have to whisper sweet nothings in her side scoops?
I too have this same whine when cold in my 06' manual. The tranny will whine no matter if your engine is hot or cold because it's not mated with the block. Thus the engine temp won't help warm up the tranny/transaxle fluid.
The whine is a similar sound to straight cut gears like the sound you hear in the WRC rally cars.
You need to "heat up the lube so the tranny doesn't whine" lol!
I don't believe any damage is being done. I just had my tranny/transaxle fluid changed and there was no sign of any metal dust in the oil.

My dealer tells me that for '06-early '08, Aston is recommending changing to a lighter oil for the Transmission to make cold-shifting easier. Some owners have had trouble shifting, and if so there are replacement bushings for the shifting arms to correct this problem.

I have the whine too until the car is warmed up. It seems more obvious when it's colder outside. Also when it's cold outside, it's difficult to shift into 2nd gear, again until the car is warmed up. There is a fix, but it's expensive (surprise!). I just skip 2nd gear during the first 10 minutes after a cold start and that works pretty well.
Could potentially be a bearing thats wearing out. My car has zero whine when cold, then again I have RP so I am not sure if that helps. Sometimes when the clutch throwout bearing starts to go bad you can get this whining sound as well.
How smoothly does your clutch engage/disengage? How far off the floor does your clutch start to grab? If its grabbing just off the floor it may possibly be time for clutch replacement.
