rough between 2k and 3k revs

rough between 2k and 3k revs
Does anybody know what this problem may be?; when the car is out of gear and I rev the engine between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm, the engine doesn't feel smooth. It's a little rough and choppy. I'm concerned. Any help?
