Quote: Speaking of oil, does anyone know of a source for the Castrol Edge 10-60 other than the dealer?

See my post above. It's Castrol TWS but it's carried by all BMW dealers I have not seen it outside a dealer. A forum buy would be a good thing (but probably only if you wanted enough for a full change). The local BMW dealer I go to charges $18 a bottle.

You will be fine, nothing to worry about. Ford guys run thinner oil as well. I think the main reason they put thicker oil is to quiet down the engine to make it sound more refined. I ran 40weight in mine and it loved it, no issues whatsoever.

0W40 Mobil 1 is fine even in hot weather. AM initially recommended 10W60 but they released a service bulletin 2 years ago to give the OK for 0W40 Mobil 1, which most AM dealers use today. I don't have the service bulletin but you have nothing to sweat about. You can always insist on dealer using 10W60 as anything under the sun is possible but don't be surprised if they charge $25 per quart for 12 quarts special order. Just go with the 0W40...it'll be fine and I've been using it too on my V8V.

I also live in Austin, TX. what i do is that i either order the oil on the internet, or buy it at the BMW dealership (TWS 10W60). Get the other components (filter, o-rings, washer) and i take it to my own mechanic (Ex AM). It takes about 1h, and i can watch what he is doing.
if you want more info, let me know.

What's better , the Castrol TWS or Castrol Edge sport ????

Guess what the Dealer sold me that had a label on it that showed that it had a AM part number?

Castrol 5w-50 synthetic is the best all around oil with the largest temperature range for most climates. You can run it year round no problem.

Redline 10-60 is probably a better oil, but isnt recommended. i would worried about using a 50 weight , because AM specs a 60 weight. Is there something we are not considering here?

I have a '13 V8V and the manual specifically calls for 10W-60. Make the dealer change it out.

If you mean the Castrol TWS or Castrol Edge Professional ..it's the same oil, just the name was changed/replaced by Castrol ..the latest name is actually combined.. "Castol Edge Professional TWS 10W60"

So what did the dealer sell you?
