Buzz from Instrument Cluster Area

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue that I've had for some time now.

When I rev the engine up to around 3K - 4K RPMs, usually in 2nd or 3rd gear, I noticed this buzz coming from the instrument cluser/steering column area. I previously described this buzzing noise as a high-pitched harmonic reasonance sound.

Anyhow, I took it to my dealer about 6 months ago to get it looked at. After hearing the buzz, the AM tech also felt it was coming from the driver's side dash or steering column area. But after hearing it once, we were not able to replicate it anymore. So, the AM tech ended up taking out the leather dash panels and tying up certain wiring harnesses behind the steering column which we said might be responsible for the noise.

Of course, the noise is back and more frequent than before. This time when I heard the noise I immediately pushed against the glass of the instrument cover and it seemed to have an immediately effect of cutting off the noise.

Assuming I've identified the culprit, I am curious if any other folks out there have had a similar issue with the instrument cover?

Also, does anyone know if it is possible to drive without the instrument cover? This is probably the best way for me to diagnose this issue. I know that the instrument cover has some wiring at the top, so I don't know if that will cause the speedometer or other electronics to not work if removed.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Are you talking about taking off the leather cluster hood? ..if so then yes you can drive without it..it'sjust held in place by spring clips, then a phillips screw secures a strap, once you detach the spring clips you will see the screw.

You can even drive without the cluster completely..hehe thats if your daring enough

Thanks for chiming in Irish...I was thinking of driving without the leather cluster hood as well as the glass cover (leaving only the instrument cluster in place). I'll suggest that to my AM tech when I drop the car off and see what he thinks. I don't know what else could be causing the buzz from around that area. I guess one of the many quirks of hand-built cars....
