The Vantage gets a new V8 engine
The current sound of euro muscle is cool and all, but the Vantage V8 is just so much better. A VP here has the C63 AMG and while it's bewildering fast and sounds really cool, my Vantage just sounds better.
I may be a victim of PR and hype, but I feel like a contemporary Aston Martin really does sound like a gentleman's sports car in a way that no one else can touch. It would be a real shame to lose that very unique characteristic.
We (AM owners and fans) sure do hold the brand to high expectations, don't we. "Please stay small and bespoke and special in a way that only a low production type can be...oh, and stay in business too."
Sound is more a factor of the exhaust system than the engine (assuming the same number of pistons). Aston and all manufacturers tune their exhaust systems to produce what they consider to be the right sound for the car.
My post on PH:
The key word in the press release is bespoke -- "development of bespoke V8 powertrains." If that's what happens, so it's not just AMG engines in Astons, this could be great. An Aston with an AMG -- or any other firm's -- engine would completely ruin it for me, no matter how "great" that engine may be.
Use M-B’s technology and know-how, use the electronics and emissions tech. Adapt their direct injection, stop-start (but let me turn it off if I want to), etc. Use their engines as a starting point, as was done with the current V8 and V12, and develop Aston-only engines with their own bespoke bore and stroke, crank, rods, pistons, cams, heads, valves, etc. Don’t just use retuned M-B engines, like what Bentley does with VW/Audi engines. These are expensive, iconic cars. This is Aston Martin – respect that and spend the money to do it right. Ford did, and that strategy made for the best and most successful cars in Aston Martin history. Build on that – don’t throw it away.

This is phenomenal news and it appears they got a great deal on it also. It really catapults Aston Martin to the top and will keep them there. A state-of-the-art supply of engines, transmissons, electronic architechture.
They can focus on what they do best; design, feel, etc.
It's really surprising they finally got this deal done after so long.
I can't wait for the new Vanquish to get a new V-12 and dual clutch transmission. I would buy one new for that.
How long do you guys think before this stuff actually appears in a car?

what engine with what power do you think will go into the next Vantage?

They've just inked the deal. If we assume the best interpretation of "bespoke", I can't imagine they will even have the engine working before mid 2014, not to mention fitted and rung out in vehicle and rolling out of the factory.
I'd love to be wrong, but development takes time. I'd guess a vehicle with a new power plant could be on a dealer's floor in 2 years. Much less and that ain't a bespoke engine.
The MB V12 is SOHC as compared to the Aston DOHC with variable timing. MB doesn't have an 'advanced' V12 to replace the AM V12, and they surely won't be developing any new V12s. So you can count on the AM V12 staying put.
Definitely very tight, but I'm guessing that the exterior is basically spec'd out already at this point and they could buy some time doing the car show circuit showing a model with the old internals. If I remember right, when the vantage first appeared at the shows, it was actually a reskinned db7 and still hit showroom floors less than 24 months later.
But then again, I'm totally guessing and hoping I'm wrong for resale value's sake =)
Possible?

I don't see the chassis being changed, it's a design that has a large amount of room for improvement
Engine sound that some of u are going on about...the V8 will still sound the same whether it's a jag, benz, ford, tata engine under the bonnet..The sound is all done by the exhaust design..look at a 1995 mustang 5.0 and a 2013 mustang 5.0, they are very similar with the iconic mustang tone..So I highly doubt Aston will not invest to keep there iconic V8 Vantage exhaust tone..they've always had cash for R&D on things like this, and it's done in-house

I wonder if the turbo V-8 will go into the Vanquish. Irish07, what power do you think they will get out of these engines for the Vantage and Vanquish?
