Here we go again...

Hell, as long as this means a wonderful new Vantage is around the corner (it's really about time), I'm happy.

copy/paste of a post about this i put on facebook

It's been a long time coming, and I'm not surprised to see the deal go through. AMG is a good fit to help AM develop its engines. And with emissions and fuel economy restrictions getting evermore stringent, AM needed a partner to survive. That was the entire purpose behind the Cygnet, which is just a rebodied Toyota iQ with a leather interior - which raises the price from $15k for the iQ to $45k for the Cygnet!

I've actually drawn parallels between my engine and that of AMG, and I'm not worried about any shared architecture, so long as AM's cars don't lose their feel (which happened with the Toyobaru BR-Z/FR-S. Toyota engineered all the Subaru out of it, and I felt the car was a huge disappointment. Very numb, and a bit boring to drive).

The downside is that this might be the death knell for AM's wonderful manual transmission cars. I hope that isn't the case, but manuals are getting harder and harder to find these days. But if AMG sticks to simply helping AM get more power/efficiency/etc out of its engines, everything will be fine.

Wow big news. Curious to see what results from this partnership. Hoping it doesn't mean supercharging the V8, which is sort of like cheating to me but something that AMG loves to do.

Yeah, somehow Ferrari keeps their engines NA and still manages to deliver gobs of power in reasonably light packages. Super and turbo have their place but I prefer my exotics to go without them (a statement I'm sure I'll contradict).

I do hope AML's guys stick to their NA style and leave the blowers to AMG.

Ferrari. Exactly who I was thinking of in terms of N/A. It's amazing how much power they can extract from a naturally-aspirated engine. My 6.0L V12 has 510 bhp while the F12's 6.3L has 730 bhp. Yes, the F12 is a wee bit more expensive, but still . . .

I don't think Ferrari would be willing to partner with AM, or anyone outside of Fiat for that matter. Plus, their engines are designed very differently from AM's. I still think AMG is a better fit for AM that most companies.

Oh yeah, not suggesting AM should partner with Ferrari. Just saying that a lot of power can be obtained without resorting to forced induction.

Just saw this on Jalopnik in regard to this news. Not agreeing or disagreeing -- just showing what others are saying about it.

"This is fantastic news for Aston Martin given that their current crop of engines are either heavily reworked versions of a Jaguar/Land Rover V8 that debuted in 1996, or derivatives of their sole V12, which debuted in the 1999 DB7. That V12 is, in fact, two Ford V6s held together with wallpaper paste.

If any of you are upset that Aston is losing some of its particularly independent charm, remember that Pagani uses AMG V12s and V8s and is all the better for it."

I always felt like the reports that aston was not going to use AMG engines was just wishful thinking by AMG haters, it never made business sense lol. I fully support the move ... AMG is the best engine manufacturer for the masses, and they are the largest V12 manufacturer in the world .... it makes sense

Not anymore, they do not make a single supercharged car anymore. Twin Turbo V8 is a different story.

However, people forget that their new Naturally Aspirated 5.5L V8s all have cylinder deactivation, stop/start amongst many other features and get fantastic gas mileage. They can easily make 400+ HP and more important a boatload of torque (one thing always missing from the older Jag powerplants).

Whats interesting is they specifically state for V8 engines ... but there's no mention of the V12s. Benz mentioned they were getting rid of the V12 for their product lines, but that doesn't mean they can't still make bespoke V12s for other manufactrers (such as Pagani Hyuara's new V12TT).

I think bespoke NA engines would be a great logical step (if it can meet stricter emissions and MPG ratings). And the new 5.5L NA engines are fantastic, and have a fantastic european muscle car sound (in line with aston's character).

I would really prefer astons not use twin turbo setups (I don't think they will in order to maintain Aston character). Fingers crossed

Mercedes AMG has just finished development on their new Dual Clutch Transmissions (CLA45 and SLS Black series). So I am sure Aston is trying to find new transmission supplier as well. If so the old single clutch units could be a thing of the past.

In order to save costs, they may be forced to ditch the graziano manual ...

OR eh may have huge excess inventory of the graziano gearboxes and try to mate the two somehow. Tough to say... But given the trend in the exotic car world ... manual is going the way of the dodo bird. Odds are, no more manuals (even Lamborghinj announced the manual is going away after 2014). Porsche GT3 is PDK only, Ferrari ditched it years ago, so on and so forth..... Aston is literally the last one

So I guess now we might actually have a V8VAMAMG. Or is it an AMGAM-V8V? Hmm.
