Has anyone attempt to remove the reading lamp pod off a DB9? Just wondering how this comes off. I am thinking of mounting a radar detector there.

Assuming you have a car without rain-sensing windshield wipers, remove the rearview mirror. It is held in place by a single allen head hex bolt. If you have an auto-dimming and/or Homelink mirror, you will also need to disconnect the power cable.

Remove the microphone cover; it is the small plastic piece with the small vents on it. It clips in place with two small tabs; one on top and the other at the bottom. You can pry it off with a flat thin instrument similar to a butter knife. Be careful so as to not break the tabs.

Once the mic cover is off, you need to remove a small screw (usually phillips) inside the hole. This screw holds the map light assembly to the roof.

There is a metal tab on the front of the assembly the supports the front-facing side of the assembly to the header rail. You will need to slide the assembly carefully toward the windshield to disengage it. Once you do that, you can disconnect the map lights by turning the connectors 1/4 turn and pulling lightly. The assembly should be completely free at that point.

 

Hello Karl, thanks for the tip. I got the cover off. Now I need to figure out if I can get 12V off the homelink power feed without running a wire down.

 

I have a radar detector cable wired into my car. The cable comes out from where the map light pod is (like you're doing) to get to the windshield-mounted detector. The cable runs from the map light pod, inside the headliner along the top of the windshield, down inside the A-pillar trim panel, and under the dash where it plugs in. Completely hidden and unnoticeable except for where the cable comes out from the pod.

After some hints from Karl, I splice in two sets of connectors to the 12v line feeding into homelink mirror. I used the keyed 0.100 spacing connectors so I don't accidentally reversed them. One for the radar detector and one for car DVR when I get around to mounting it. Instead of using tie-wrap, I use electrical tape to secure the addition.

 

Made the mount adapter out of 1/8" ABS plastic. Seems like 45 degree will hang the detector level.

 

Now that there is extra weight on the lamp cover, I added a 1mm piece of aluminum plate, JB weld epoxy inplace to add rigidity to the front tab. Added some epoxy to the edge to form a fillet. I hope this doesn't break.

 

all done for now.
