If sales tax is around 8%, what is general rule of thumb for tax, license and registration? 10% of car's sales price for everything?

 

If you google the state you reside in, with the keyword license fee, or registration fee, you can rack up the math.

I think in NJ its like 7% sales tax, less than a hundred for registration, license plate is like 20 (or free) and less than 200 for the title.

 

In Texas you pay 6.25% of the sales price. It does not matter if you are buying or leasing. The title and plates fee is $84 and you need to get the car inspected for $26.

If you are trading in any car(s), your sales price gets adjusted accordingly.

Private sale is another story. If you declare the sales car value too low, the state uses a SPV (standard presumptive value) based on your VIN and checks the wholesale market numbers in the region. Astons or similar brands do not qualified as they don't have enough data to go by. I think you need a written/certified appraisal if you for example say, you bought a V8V for $20K.
