Glass key repair

Has anyone tried to refresh their ECU/ glass key without buying new parts? The black area is pretty well scratched. Is it lacquer or plastic? And are the chrome sides plastic or metal? I'd like to find a way to renew this. Once I know what the finishes are, I'll give some methods a try and post the winning process here.

Not sure about the black parts, but the sides are stainless so should polish up nicely. I treat my key like Glass it is only out of the AM key case when it's in the ignition.

Please post pictures and what you did as it will help to see how well they clean up.

Good luck.

I tested the shiny black sides with a few different methods, and it seems to be coated in a hi-gloss clear coat, with plastic underneath. The clear is what is scratching, and it's wear is what is making it look rubbish. I've got a solution in mind that I believe will work. I will work on it this weekend, and report my results. I have a few secret steps up my sleeve, but I'm going for it. Please join me in hoping it works! If it does I'll fix yours.

Cool, let us know. If it is clear, maybe just scuff it and re-clear with a good automotive clear coat.
