And, in the spirit of resurrecting this thread...

Are the guts of a plastic key transferrable to a crystal key? I have one plastic key and one crystal key. I'm wondering if I can purchase a crystal key on eBay with no regards to future programmability, and simply swap the guts of the working plastic key I have into it.

Likewise, my crystal key has some of the chrome flaking off -- can its guts be transferred to another crystal key?

I stumbled upon an answer to this yesterday, from Irish I believe. maybe somewhere in the 7 pages of the "What problems have you had" thread..?
I'm sure irish will chime in soon enough.

Said something along the lines of "The guts are 100% the same, but needing the ID codes still..? or its the simple fact that earlier guys don't have the push-in-to-start, but an actual key..?

idk. like I said, im sure hell chime in with the correct answer haha.

If you bought everything to try and convert an older style turn key unit to a newer push in console remote type, a flash would have to be written by Aston and loaded to the car, and that's a big if on will they do this for you..

The circuit board inside the remotes...old versions and new versions are the same volve circuit, Aston just change the exterior casing to the Emotion Control Unit insert in dash type of casing...that's it. If you notice on the newer style remotes there is no panic button, open the remote and you'll see the button the board is still there...aka which the panic button is on the older style remotes

I'm a tech for an Aston dealer, when ppl drop there newer style remotes in water and there at fault ...(customer pay issue), I order the old set of remotes and swap the internals to get the remotes working again for a lot cheaper price to the client...

Which ever route you decide, if you get keys that you want programmed, just make sure you get the ID numbers for the keys which is attached to the packaging(I see this all teh time when ppl buy remotes on ebay with no ID number..if you buy new you get the ID numbers)..if the vehicle ever looses the ID codes..the remotes are scrap without those ID numbers..nobody else will have them, not even Aston on file..

Hope this answered your question...

I read that and some other things he posted.

It appears that you can indeed swap the guts of a plastic key to another plastic key, and everything just works, including locks and starting.

It also appears that in theory you could transfer the circuit board from the plastic key to the shell of a crystal/glass key, and it would work. But, apparently there is some sort of seal or something that you must carefully cut or work around, and Irish07 didn't quite give full details on what has to be done with that.

I may choose to take one for the team and be a guinea pig for this at some point, and if I do I'll take pictures along the way.

I would make sure they have 24 digit seed codes. The clients that have brought me Volvo remotes for programming in the past did not come with similar style seed codes. An unprogrammed remote without the seed codes on an aston is basically a paperweight.

Tim

enquiring at Volvo spare parts in Brisbane they tell me the remotes don't have a code and they just code them off the car

I have an Aston remote but no code

is it possible to use an uncoded Volvo one? to replace the workings in the Aston remote

The CEM and the remotes are identical but due to different types of diagnosic equipment and software, they just aren't really compatible. Codes come with the remotes when new and are unique to that remote. Unfortunately, there's no way to extract the code from the remote.

question I have a plastic key but it is totally beat to ****, can I buy this https://astonmartinbits.com/models/5...age/parts/4944 and take it to the dealer or maybe I can take my existing internals and move them to the new key? Anyone done this job themselves before?

would much rather do that than pay $625+160 to "fix" buy buying a new key I already have but is just beaten up

sonnies, I did that last year, I kept the back cover for the original fob as it has the piece needed to start you car (little black electronic piece glue to the back cover) but swapped all old internal to a the new key and it works like a charm.

Angry 2000 DB7 Vantage Remote Reprogramming

Hi guys, first time using this, can any one help me, I have both key fobs for my 2000 DB7 and now neither is working. Replaced batteries and all lights work, but no luck in getting them to work the doors or boot.

Can anyone help me to figure out how to reprogram in system?

Does the little green LED light flash on the remote when the buttons are pressed?

Yes both the green and red lights light up on both remotes, for doors and trunk, also they both used to work, they stopped working probably about 6 months ago
