The extreme chamfer on the R4-S is part of why the pad is so quiet, but yeah it does sacrifice a lot of pad area, which is why it isn't the best for track use. I found an old blog post with some more info in it comparing the two Porterfield pads:
http://www.redpants.lol/blog/2016/11...parison-part-2

I haven't used the OEM pads on my grey car - it came with aftermarket pads, which I was never able to identify, and I've used the R4-S, then the R4, now the HPS 5.0 on it. I'm assuming my red car has OEM pads on it, but I haven't checked yet and I've barely put any miles on the car so far. I'll be doing an event in PA this weekend so I'll get some decent miles on it and should get a good impression of brake dust. Once I pull the pads during the major maintenance service I'll be doing on it in a couple weeks, I'll know which pads they are.

The R4-S really doesn't have any dust to speak of, it's absurdly little. The HPS 5.0 does have more dust, but from what I've heard it's much less than stock and I'd consider it a reasonable amount.

I've never used BG Stop Squeal, but other people on here have. You shouldn't need it on the R4-S or HPS 5.0 pads, so long as they're properly installed (with pad grease/anti-squeal) and bedded in. It only affects noise, which isn't an issue with either of these pads, so it's a non-issue in my opinion.

If dust is your main concern, I'd recommend the R4-S. When you get to a track day, pay attention to the pads in heavy braking zones. If you feel the pads can't take it, just let off on the gas pedal leading into those turns for the rest of the day. For example, when I tested the R4-S on the track, I'd let off the throttle at 110 mph on a long straight rather than staying in the gas and hitting 130 mph. That was more manageable for the pads and I continued through the day just fine. Sure, I'm backing off when most people are trying to hit max speeds - but it isn't a race and I actually realized that relaxing on the long straight gave me a chance to reset myself for the next lap. I still do that to this day, even with more aggressive pads, because I like having the extra few seconds to think about the lap I just finished and prep myself for the next one.

Thanks, I'll dive in and read.

But the only good reason to be on a track is to make the next lap a 10th faster than the last. You get 40 minutes to quietly contemplate when others are trying to set best lap. If it'll do 130 at the end of the straight, I want to see 131

Rich...Were you running 100 octane in Mexico? Straight track with read outs or just going by the car reading...
Anyway...Good for you...Your grey car is nice. While I know you are manual stick...I have found downshifting and upshifts are quicker with the paddles on the auto-shift. My son's mustang that is automatic is quicker shifting than his stick mustang.
My buddy that has a Vette ...High end does 3.3 0-60 automatic....Of course he is the president of an international company and can afford...

Thanks for the details on the pads...I appreciated for future options...

Anytime you want to put that theory to the test I'll line my stick up beside you and we can answer that in less than 5 seconds

So funny....As long as it is not too cold outside as your manual will not move... Teasing...I like the guys on this format...Even had PM's with you...Nice guy...But facts are facts...If you do not believe me...I would read the book page 41...3 times faster and I have hyper shift...Which is scary crazy...Only tried once...Hey...I still like your car and think you are good guy...

You made me get it out and read something about SS's.

So, *up to* 3 times faster, and saves you .1 [up to??] seconds 0-62. So a tenth in 1 shift.

I'm still going to get you 2 tenths off the line, and I would bet I'm not 3 times slower on the shift

I don't want to troll you. You could save a couple ms. but I'd have you by a fender before we had to shift. The lightweight flywheel will more than offset any shift advantage [I'm still not convinced exists]. Anytime you want to feel it from the right seat just let me know

I am getting some chirping noise from the rear of my Rapide. I think it's from the brakes. I do use the emergency brake (electronic) any time I park on a surface that is not level. Will have the dealer look at it soon.

Never noticed the sound until I drove with the windows down. Double pane glass does a lot to reduce noise!

Cant remember if the emergency calipers are on both rear sides. I tried hitting brakes hard to seat them better, etc.... (I do think I remember being able to pull the emergency handle up a bit and the noise went away). Any thoughts.
I swapped my original pad with Carbotech 1521 pads
(had to send in my pads, they removed brake material and put carbotech 1521), that was like 25K miles, have not had any noise at all and brake dust is minimal. some people like porter field pads too

Exactly what my car is doing. I can live with a little squeak, but this is beyond that.

Is the procedure for removing the handbrake pads the same as the brake calipers...just tap the pins out? I've been unable to find any instructions and the pins on mine don't seem to want to budge.

The handbrake pins come out opposite direction of main brake calipers. So have you tried the correct way for removing? Main brake pins removable from inside, handbrake from the outside.
