Fuel gauge sender replacement V8V

My fuel sender seems to have a dead spot. It goes to 7/8 tank then to empty then after about 50 miles will go back to 1/2 full and work normally from there.
I know there is an access panel in the back on the slanted area. But was wondering if anyone had instructions on what to do once I get into the tank. From the schematics it looks like its mounted to something inside the tank and has a plug in connector but more detail would be helpful
thanks
