Question Shipping Car to Europe for a few weeks?

Has anyone ever shipped their car to Europe from States to drive around in the summer? Keeping it registered with US plates?

Talk to Erik Dietz. He did it in his R8. He's responsive and quite helpful on IG I spoke to him a while back and he pointed me to this:.

I run an import business "search De Koning Exclusive" predominantly for Cars I source from the UAE and Japen. I'm based in the Netherlands after a 10 years stint abroad in Singapore and Dubai. Re the import business I run: I have to road-register the cars to comply with EU euro-norms which are as strict as California regulations. I can assist in the logistics around it and getting the car on a one-month 'German' registration + insurance which allows you to drive throughout the European union, no problem. Feel free to touch base if your plans become more solid. Port of Rotterdam would be the preferred landing. Cheers, Simon

Since you run an import business, could you please give a ballpark estimate on shipping a DB11 from Portland Maine (or Boston MA if Portland is unavailable) to Germany as well as from Savannah Georgia (or Brunswick GA if Savannah is unavailable) to Germany and back. Thanking you in advance.

I think you can drive with us plates in Europe but you need to inform your insurance company. Most won’t insure it in Europe.

guy gtjoey did it with his gt40.

That's what I thought. I don't want to re-register it in another country. I see cars from Europe driving in the US without an issue.

Perhaps there's supplementary insurance I can buy just for Europe?

I shipped my car from UK Southampton to Nova Scotia, drove down to Key West then back to Jacksonville and shipped it back to Southampton. It was vandalised on both journeys. On the way out, the DVD player, phone, jack and tools were stolen, ripping out the centre console to do it, and on the way back, the entire stereo system was stolen, all the wiring loom cut in the back to pull it all out easily and they did burnouts and donuts in it until the clutch caught fire, then they towed it on the ship and off again at Southampton. Marine law means the shippers are not responsible, and its almost impossible to insure it for transit. Good luck.

Try Hagerty. I know there are some insurance companies that will allow it up
to 6 months I think it was. I can drive my BC registered car in Europe but I need to buy a special coverage etc. It will also be insured while in transit on a boat or train. I have been thinking to do the same that’s why I know.

We ship mainly 45ft containers from Miami --> port of Rotterdam. Depending on season, pricing varies between USD 2500 up to 3000 per container. This is based on terms "to port only". Given yours in an AM DB11 treat it the right way to get her in a 20ft container on her own: this shall cost 1750 thru 2250 on 'to port' conditions. Hamburg is the next port of call (after Rotterdam) so add an extra USD 100.

Now, on the US-side you need someone to pack and handle the car to include drainage of petrol, disable alarm, add some extra PSI in the tyres etc. Have another USD 500 budgetted for that. Same for this side of the pond.

It's all a bit cheaper when you combine your car with other cars in a 45ft.

Thank you for the pictures and pricing.

Is a vehicle driven or pushed into the container? If driven, I would not want the driver to then crawl out the window and climb down the side of the car which would almost guarantee some sort of damage.

I was told you have to pay VAT for the car when it arrives in the EU and that amount will be returned when the car leaves. Is this still true?

A reputable shipper will push it in. Given the width of the DB11 there is no other way anyhow. Make sure that pre-shipment your Battery is full charged.

That is correct indeed, however some businesses have article 23 exemptions which means no VAT is to be paid upfront. I have such registration for my cars I bring in from abroad. Only once I sell it it will require to charge VAT to my customer, not when I bring it in: this would mean too much cashflow is floating around.

What is the value used when calculating VAT for temporary use in Europe? Is there like a KBB for Europe?

I use the purchase-price / traders price I pay + the shipping costs added. (thats a mandatory rule). In your case it would be fairly easy to put an estimate on that. Note that there is, based on HS-codes, a 10% EU-tax which is to be paid as well. I wil have to find out how to get an exemption for that given the fact your car will return after the trip here in Europe. Sure this is possible, likely under a 'goods in transit' declaration.

You would have to be out of your gourd to ship a car to europa and back and expect no damage! It's hard enough to ship domestically or your household goods without damage
