Comments: engine timing cover leaking engine oil, removal of cover to clean and renew gaskets and reseal to engine.

This was noted during my annual service. Is this common, expected?

Is this a big job? I am assuming it requires a lot of disassembly to get that cover off.

was a bit surprised at the quote to remedy.

Is this something you would trust an independent to do or would you use the local dealer?

It looks to me that you have a weep, not a leak. There's no danger to the car with a weep as the oil level won't significantly change with this. Does it EVER leave drips on the floor? I wouldn't address anything this minor, not worth the thousands.

 

I agree at this stage it is more of a weep. No oil ever on floor. It is blowing oil from driving along the underside. But not a lot. It is a low mileage car, only 15k miles.

 

Common problem. Big job. Some say it is engine out while others say it can be done with the engine in place. Either way, it is mucho bucks. Don’t bother unless you have oil everywhere.
