Sportshift Clutch Wear Index - How To Interpret The Numbers?
Sportshift Clutch Wear Index - How To Interpret The Numbers?
I know my clutch is close to being fully worn but struggling to find the ranges for these values, I had it in my head that it 1800 was when a new clutch was imminent.
I have:
First clutch closed position of 1692
Kiss point delta of 443
Current Clutch closed position of 1713
Clutch position stroke of 1160
Clutch wear index of 1833
Clutch wear index self-tuned counter of 24
I've seen some say 1800 is the top of the wear range, some say 2,500, some say 3,000.
Can anyone clarify this for me?
Thanks

Also what you need to know is not every clutch reading is the same on every car. The 2500 or 3000 counts are laughable. Estimates of 1400-2000 max. And it all depends on how it was used and learned on starts. If you have a 1700 or so reading it could last for another 5k mi. Or maybe more but you are at the mercy of the ASM module and it's readings. If it reads I'm worn out, that's it. If you take that 1700 count and replace the clutch, you will see it still has material left that to the eyes looks good. You will never get the same miles out of a SS transmission clutch as a 3-pedal car. 40k miles. Is average on most SS cars for clutch replacement. Unless it's been abused.

Do you happen to know if the car will give me signs of wear such as slipping before it refuses to go in to gear?
Reason I ask is I have a few other expenses before replacing my clutch so I'm reluctant to use the car at the moment knowing the clutch is low. But there really aren't any signs of it actually having issues.
So it would be a shame to leave the car standing for a few months when there was no need to.
You will not notice something like clutch slip because it does a learn each start up. The only thing one may notice is a big delay in shifting at high RPM. EX: lower shifting 1-2, 2-3 hard acceleration let's say 5k range (paddle shifting in sport) you select higher gear and it refuses to shifting until RPM's drop to 2k range. ASM module is trying to save a slipping clutch or damage. However if it shifts quickly and only drops a few hundred let the dog eat!
Then you can drive it like an old lady for 1k mi.

if you look at my readings, about 30 counts from the encoder for just over 2k miles. VAP says 2000 counts is max (for the encoder or software i'm uncertain). since the ASM will one day determine the clutch is worn and prevent you from driving it, the common wisdom is that at 1800 you are entering the danger zone and need to think about replacement.
15 counts/1000 miles of my driving and it went from around 1300 to 1700 in 24k miles by the previous owner which is 15 counts/1000 miles.
by these rates i have about 6-7k miles before replacement.
i drive pretty easy and just cruise, try to avoid stop and go traffic and sometimes punch it to pass trucks on 2 lane roads.
does that help?
call VAP, they are nice guys and don't bite
how many miles on your car?
