A4 2.0 buring lots of oil
A4 2.0 buring lots of oil
Need some advise that some of you might have read about on other Audi forums. My next door neighbor has a A4 2.0 that has burned 5 quarts of oil in 4500 miles. The dealer tells them this is normal. The dealer replaced a valve a few months ago but the car continues to burn lots of oil. The tail pipes have a lot of soot on them and around the back bumper cover.
If anyone knows of a known issue with the 2.0 burning this much oil PLEASE let me know. They are going to met with the Audi rep in a few weeks.
thanks!

. I just got an A3 2.0 recently buy havent had it long enough to notice any oil usage.
i had a 99 2.8 V6 and it burned alot of oil. i went to get it checked out, and i needed to get my head gasket replaced, i also had close to 90k miles. id bring it in to the shop. should be under warranty
The 2.0T FSI is notorious for burning oil (IMO). it's a combination of the high C/R and the FSI, at least that is my theory. every single A4 2.0T that comes in for service at our store the tailpipes are jet black, covered entirely. I know that on my 1.8T that was modded, I can only recall needing to top up a quart 1 time, and that was during the break in period. I think the oil burning may also be caused by either lean/rich conditions, and lots of city driving. how long is your neighbor's commute? oddly, never noticed this much on my wife's 2.0T Passat, and she has 16K miles on it already, although it's a dark color and the tailpipes are not rolled like the audi's

. Oh well, i still have warranty.
Gossette, my neighbor is a relator so she drives anywhere from 25-200 miles a day. Not much city driving but lots of highway and suburb driving. She goes through about 1 qt every 1,000 miles. This becomes a problem when she is working with customers and has to stop and find oil to put in this car. Plus she can not do this her self so she has to go to the dealer. This is a new 2007 A4 2.0 so yes it is under warranty but adding oil all the time has become a hassel for her.

The FSI technology Audi is using is the main cause of excessive black build up on the tailpipes. The burn in the cylinder causes a more rich condition than most other engines.
As far as the oil concumption goes...that is due to the turbo itself and the over-engineered crankcase ventilation system that the 2.0T uses. I believe Audi is working on updated pcv valves to help with this, but this engine will still consume oil between services.-T
