RS4 Exhaust Install - Help
RS4 Exhaust Install - Help
Hey all,
Just got my GMG exhaust in the mail the other day. I want to try the install myself, however I was hoping for some help / tips from other members who have done an exhaust install on an RS4:
What size socket do I need for the exhaust bolts?
There are no gaskets that need to be replaced correct?
Any tips to make the install smoother?
Thanks in advance!

In addition to the proper tools your going to need to be able to get fully under the car. I've installed two diff exhaust systems on my S4. I have two heavy duty jacks and jack stands just incase. The bolts are the easy part it's the hangers that are a *****.
Done and done
Took all of six hours, lol, but it is on there.
As the poster above mentioned, the bolts are the easy part, while the hangers are indeed a PITA!
To get them off, I used two screw drivers and plenty of soap. First, I used a screw driver to soap up the inside area of the rubber and to warm the rubber up a little by stretching it in all directions. Then I used two screw drivers, one on top and the other on bottom, to pry the hole open while pulling the rubber over the metal stop on the hanger. I could only use one hand to do this, as I did not have much clearance with the car on jack stands. Basically, you just have to be patient and work on it. Oh, definitely wear gloves, as there are sharp edges all around the area you are working in. I cheated on the hangers at the rear bumper by just screwing off the whole hanger assembly from the bottom of the car on each side
.
The factory bolts (4) are all 13mm. The reinforcement place blocking the bolts requires a Torx 50 to remove four screws.
The factory exhaust is heavy and will fall (maybe on you) if you do not have something supporting it while you take it out from the hangers.
You need to do something with the vacuum hoses at the end of the factory exhaust that opens up the exhaust valves. I unhooked the vacuum hoses where the black tube connects with the smaller green one. I just left the green hose as is (though I guess you should plug it up somehow).
Order of install after jacking the car up and onto stands:
Unhook vacuum hoses from end of exhaust
Take off reinforcement plate blocking clamp screws where the exhaust connects with the downpipes
Loosen clamps and slide the sleeve onto the exhaust side
Undo middle exhaust hangers (PITA) (watch out for exhaust falling onto you)
Unscrew rear hanger assembly (because dealing with the hangers is a PITA)
Repeat in reverse order with your new exhaust
Take car off jack stands
Turn car on and laugh hysterically with pleasure at new sound
I'll post pictures after I wash the car. I had GMG thermal coat the canisters and tips on the exhuaust, so it looks mean as all hell on phantom black.
