operational cost of Audis

I'm looking for a newer car, the audis have caught my eye. 4's/6's likely. I hear people make comments that owning one has high operational costs. What are some of the issues of owning a car with mileage over 30000.

Sorry I cannot provide more details.

Cheers
Greg

...if you're buying an Audi with some miles on it get a decent (reputable) extended warranty as well...

Arrow Actually...

...if 1000 miles (and a month) left of the factory warranty you can get an extended warranty from the same outfit that warrants Porsches... Fidelity.

Or even buy one from the dealer (pricey).

There are a few other AM Best A+ rated Warranty providers out there.

Expect to pay from $2000+ to $4000+ depending on exclusions and length.

I really cannot predict what you need to expect... other than to say... there will be repairs...

I'm just trying to find out if the transmission/engine has some costly maintenance things I need to look out for when buying a car with mileage.

I'm leaning towards an AVANT A6.

Cheers,
GREG

It all depends on what yr and engine are in it ........ For example the transmission on the early 4.2 cars are known weak points but if the car is treated correctly it will last relatively headache free.

The years you specified don't carry the 1.8, they were upgraded to the 2.0t with direct injection. The 3.2 comes in the a6 line and is a pretty reliable straight forward motor.

I can't really speak to the newer models but I've had my '03 A4 1.8T now for 4 years - love the car but it is more costly to maintain than my Porsche, granted the Porsche is two years newer.

The CPO warranty expired 2 years ago and I've been pretty lucky up until last month when a trip to the dealership resulted in $4200 of recommended work!!! Some of these were big maintenance items:

Timing Belt/Water Pump/Accessories Service - $1300
Leaking valve cover gaskets - $930
Control arm bushings - $800
Tail shaft seal leaking - $490
RPM sensor - $200
Coolant flush - ?
Power steering flush - $180
2 failed check valves - $380
Vacuum leak - $180

The car has 68k miles and has always had oil changes every 5k and all scheduled maintenance - it's not like I had been neglecting the car!

So that got me looking into extended warranties. You can still buy them even if the car has been out of warranty for some time. I'm looking at $3-4k for a 36 month service contract. Be careful of Fidelity Warranty Services (sold at Audi dealerships) if your car has more than 50k miles. Even covered parts may not be covered due to a 'gradual reduction in operating performance caused by wear and tear' for cars over 50k miles. Most of my issues (bushings, seals, gaskets) would not have been covered anyway because of this clause. You need to do your research because these companies will find ways of wording contracts so they always win..

I can say that the Quattro drivetrain's are very sensitive to changes in OD of the tires. So if you plan to buy a Quattro it will be important to keep all the tires spinning the same revs per mile. We can shave tires to meet the OD of the other three if you ever need to. Other than that, I have friends with them and for the most part all of them have been really pleased with theirs.

If you are getting an A4, make sure to have the Camshaft, Cam Follower, and High Pressure Fuel Pump checked on the B7s
