Advice needed on '04 S4

Hi guys--I've been lurking heavily all over this board, but the time has come to pick up a B6--need some advice.
I found an '04 with 25xxx miles on AW, 6speed, black leather, and CPO; has B5 OEM RS4 rims, and an OEM RSN-E nav unit. He listed the car for $37.5.

Even given the CPO and the nav (which runs ~1500), this seems a little high to me--is 33-34k a more reasonable estimate? I had initially thought I wanted Alacantra, the CPO and the nav aren't bad starting points--the CPO is a must-have, since I'm still in school. I plan on adding a full Milltek, intake, and sways off the bat.
Any help or advice appreciated! Thanks Pic below.

He's at a retail number, you're at a wholesale one. He isn't necessarily high, however if it were me I would want to buy it closer to the wholesale price because when I would sell it (in 6 months to a year) I would want a better return.

It is a CPO car which is worth something, I would be looking to buy it for about 35 grand (plus tax).

That said, you need to do everything in your power to find out about this car's past as the 2004's had a lot of issues. We owned 2-3 of them (depending on how you view it) and to make a long story short, Audi ended up writing us a check after their attempts at giving us a replacement car failed. The original car dropped a valve and blew the motor at 300 miles, the second needed the rear differential replaced right off the truck (which involves dropping the drivetrain) and the third locked itself in reverse coming off the truck.

Audi fixed the problems but I would want to know if it was an early or late production 04, run a carfax to make sure Audi never bought it, and look into as much service history as you can find.

Hope that helps and welcome to the board,
Jeremy

Carfax looks clean, but what does looking into the service history mean? Asking for pictures of receipts?
Thanks Jeremy.

Well I don't know if it's a private party or a dealer, but either way they should be able to somehow obtain a copy of all the times it was serviced. Although they could theoretically "forget" to give you anything that showed it wa in for a serious problem.

See how the car was maintained is service history, send me the VIN and I will have a friend at audi pull the history on it. Or you can do the same at the dealer where the original owner has serviced at do that as well.
Here to help if needed. Price he is asking is a little steep, but still in the ballpak.

Is yours the one I saw in classifieds with the nice wheels and the Tein springs? I'd love to, but I need a stick...gotta have manual.

And I'll ask him for a VIN tomorrow, Bajo. Thanks.

FWIW, that CPO will become just about worthless as soon as you start modding. I've had 3 Audis with the latest being an '05 S4 Avant. Very few dealers are mod friendly and there's more than enough griping on audiworld regarding dealer issues (much of what you'd find elsewhere with other makes as well). But the point being that an Audi is not a car that you want to tweak much IMO. A catback should be fine but I wouldn't do much beyond that.

Regarding the prices, I think you're spot on in the $35k'ish range (as sickening as it seems for a $50k car to depreciate this much). There are plenty of choices in autotrader, etc. as long as you focus on the private ads. I really miss mine at times but I wanted to get something more track oriented. There are few other 4 doors that offer the smiles per mile though.

If it was bought back at one time its been tagged by audi. It will not come up as being under warranty when the VIN is entered into audi's database. Also a car cannot be Audi Assured (CPO) once its been tagged.

Is this Audi CPO or cheweys discount car lot certified? If he bought it CPO it is transferable to you, but your now the 3rd owner of this car, if that means anything to you.

Yes, with mods there goes the warranty. But realize somthing, if they added that nav to a car which did not originally have it there goes the warranty on most everything in the intiror.

From a dealership that price sounds fine. But if it is how it sounds (buying it from someone that bought it CPO) thats high.

Just to give you a data point.

I paid $33500 for mine last August for an 04 w/ 15k Miles.

With that being said, if it had the Crank Seal or Transmission Issue, I would skip it. Find a late model 04 or 05.
