Motor blew, but there's a silver lining.

This past tuesday my motor blew while I was engaging 1st gear at about 5mph. No warning, temps were normal, oil light did not come on...well not till after it spit a 4 foot wide path of oil all over the road. To make a long story short, I threw a rod and have one hole an inch square through the oil pan and another smaller out the side of cylinder 2.

I was planning on selling the car before summer was over because I'm getting ready for school. Since it would be hard to sell the car as-is and the price to repair is so high, I have decided to keep the car after it is fixed. It throws a wrench in my plans of driving a B6 S4 by next summer but oh well. The silver lining however is that while the motor is out I have decided to upgrade the new engine with a GT28 turbo kit, replace hoses, possibly motor mounts and upgrade the rest of the hardware required for the kit.

I've figured out most of what I am gonna need except for injectors and tuning. I figure injectors won't be that hard to find but software is my main issue. Does anyone know of a tuner or company that sells GT28 tuning? I would like to get back on the road as soon as possible so I can't afford to ship the car off somewhere. I'm looking for somewhere between 300 crank and 300whp. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I can't wait to get her up and running again, I will keep everyone updated.

Yessir, I've already found a kit and everything. Since I'm gonna be running stock intercooler and my current APR chip for a little bit, I'm gonna keep it conservative for now. Once I figure out the tuning and cooling issues, then I might tweak it a little.

Are you referring to the 8 year extended warranty thing? I have heard about this but not officially from Audi.

go on audiworld and ask a guy by the handle "tightt" about his A4...its running a GT28, its quattro and all that goodness...the cars can def handle that kind of power and more. as for the oil sludge warranty, i've never gone thru that ordeal...most of my calls to AoA about much smaller issues fell on deaf ears and i realised why once I worked at an audi dealer...the dealer and Audi's personnel have say over what gets covered and what doesnt...the Audi Reps easily contacted over the phone are powerless to do anything but take msgs and call the dealer about it. prepare for battle if you want a free engine.

while they're in there, make sure you replace ALL the vacuum lines. I put a K04 on my 99.5 1.8t and in the course of the next 500 miles, basically blew all the lines out one at a time. It ended up costing me about $3k even with the shop doing the labor for free towards the end.

check on audizine.com also. there's a few people with gt28rs setups I believe on there.

Thanks everyone. I went to the dealer today and they basically said that since I was getting low oil lights instead of low oil PRESSURE lights, it probably wasn't the problem. Even though when you take off my oil cap you can see bits of sludge. They also said that in order for them to cover any issues, one would need a complete record of all oil change history, which I'm pretty good about but for sure don't have every receipt. My mods probably wouldn't help either...

I ordered a GT28R kit and am still looking for tuning and injector references. I will check out some of the Audi forums. Once everything arrives in about a week, I'll take some pictures and continue updates.

angryswede, I was looking to replace all the hoses and probably still will but the shop I ordered the parts from said I should wait till after I get a front mount IC. However, I think I'll still order many of the other hoses and lines. Thanks for reminding me!

if your looking at having 300 whp i recommend a stage 3 build
i had a vast stage 3 s4 with ko4 rs6 turbos and it was running 450 whp and 11.9s 1/4 mile times
vast performance has alot on the b5 2.7 liter and they have gt28 kits too but you have to email about those
the gt28 kits require stronger internals though and alot more work
i also recommend to bore out the cylinders to make it a 2.8 liter to get better power out of the gt28s
