Recommend ATP Garrett GTRS?
Recommend ATP Garrett GTRS?
Does anyone here have an Audi a4 1.8t with the Garrett GTRS bolt on turbo? Is it actually as good as it sounds? Ive been looking at the APR Stage III+ Turbo kit.. It puts out 333chp for $5299 and went on atp turbo and saw the gtrs putting out 350chp for $1595. Seems like a great deal and just bolts straight onto the exhaust manifold.. anyone have this in their a4 and recommend it over the APR kit?
Well I'm no expert, but my best friend has a very fast B6 1.8T with a GT2871R, and he had a GT28RS first and its the ATP kit. The ATP kits have potential to be really customized and can make much more power. However it is not a polished final product. He went through a lot of trouble getting it running right and still if he hammers it too much he blows off his manifold bolts.
The APR kits might not make as much power but are far more engineered and reliable. So pick which one suits your needs best, reliability or max power.

Yeah my friend Brian was just tuning his Talon TSi and over-rode his custom laptop CPU warning him of high oil presure, then all of a sudden, the manifold blew and the floor poped off. UNREAL!

Good one. No but seriously I have the kit and it is known to back out the manifold bolts. Haven't had this happen on mine. The problem arises from the placement of the turbo. The stock K03 sits low on the motor, lower than where the manifold meets the motor, not putting much strain on the bolts. The ATP kits need more room and therefore the turbos sit horizontal to if not higher than the manifold, putting more stress on the bolts. I am pretty impressed with the kit and while it is not *perfect*, I am impressed with the overall package, especially for the price. The GT2871R is the eliminator kit right? which uses the stock manifold? I have heard people like this kit for the price and maybe it has less problems, I couldn't tell you.
I have the full GT28RS kit with manifold, 3" DP, intake, etc. When all was said and done with tuning and injectors mine was about $3k.
They just back out, so you just have to tighten them down again.

A GT2871R is a GT28RS with a 71mm compressor wheel (28RS is 60mm I think).
