B7 RS4 vs E92 M3

I hope this article embarrasses BMW to put a decent shifter in place. The RS4's shifter is very, very nice. It's the 2nd best stock shifter I've felt (behind the NSX). The E46 M3's shifter reminded me of a 90's Sentra SE-R shifter, just absolutely horrible. Apparently this hasn't changed for the E92 M3.
the only problem i currently see with Audi is that all of their cars..
i repeat ALL of their cars sit WAY too high
as far as the exhaust note.. go stand by an RS4 and listen to it in S mode...
then report back ..
it has one of the sexiest exhaust sounds i have ever heard...
btw, these cars sit too high...

It's actually pretty awesome. Every single one of my car enthusiast co-workers couldn't believe it was stock. Even my neighbor said it sounded like a race car when I banged the corner and ripped through a couple of gears.
As far as comparing it to a Ferrari or Lambo w/Tubi, of course there's no comparison. But compared to 99% of cars out there, it sounds awesome. I can't wait until I get the Milltek full exhaust on it.

I think the opinion on the exhaust depends on what you are used to. For me it is perfect! I had a 540/6 with stright pipes, now that was loud and obnoxious and very sweet at the same time. It got very old at highway speed and sitting idle at trffic lights. My nieghbors never leave nasty notes on my front door with the RS4, just the same 2 thumbs up where ever I go. Under WOT the RS4 is as dialed in as one could ask for, not a hint of tin. I actually prefer it over the Pcar exhaust.
I drove the Rs4 last month with the Milltek and it was amazing, but at 5K I will buy a vintage guitar with the money.
People are buying the RS4 and expecting a sports car, which it is not! What you are getting IMO is the ultimate GT and probably the greatest 4 door ever produced. When I need a true sports car stance I sign up for a race weekend with Skip.
I also own a 530i, soon to be tossed for an S6 and I can not wait for that freaking lease to end.
See ya BMW you guys had a very good shot at keeping my business. Maybe you'll read my next 30 letters through the CCA

The story was I had a deposit on the M5 and M6, BMW refused to share any info but they felt fine taking a deposit and allowing the dealer network to sell these cars for 15K over list.
They basically told me to get over the need for a manual tranny, I didn't need it and neither did anyone else in the USA. Then the M5 comes out, ugly as ever and CCA releases a letter that a 6spd is on the way. Gee, that was a hard decision. So I call my dealer back and ask them for the info and they claim they will not order it since I would be the only buyer. Off to Audi I went! The Rs4 only comes in a 6spd. I hate SMG, detest it! The ones I have driven were garbage, SMG 1, 2, 3 it matters not it is an auto for people who can't drive a manual but want a manual. At the end of the day BMWNA finally admitted the lack of a manual was simply due to them trying to prevent engine damage, what a crock!
bimmer.org has dozens of posts on the E46 M3 engine problem with SMG and 6 spd trannies, so I do not think an SMG will prevent a redline detonation.
But what do I know?

wow, that sucks. i totally do not agree with companies/dealers treating people this way especially if you are paying a premium.
i dont normally buy new cars which simplifies things to some extent.
but i rather like the smg. been driving manuals for years and the smg is great for what i wanted to accomplish this time around. been driving it for a month and a half and am getting used to how fast it shifts at lower rpm vs. higher rpms and can now drive it no less smooth than a manual. there is just a learning curve on it...

When the new M3 comes out with a dual-clutch transmission, all thoughts of SMG will be left behind. It is so much better than SMG, it's incomparable. I will always have at least one true manual transmission car in my garage though...
