the reason for swapped out clusters was due to pixel problems that developed on the cars...all model years...they would burn out.
BMW as a goodwill gesture would swap out the cluster for you....I believe they gave the part you paid the labor if it was beyond warranty...
but in 2000 all the cluster's were black faced...my 2000 which was a May 2000 build car had the black cluster...never saw an unchanged 2000 w/original grey cluster.
