- Car easily passes SMOG (and is not due for SMOG for another year - done at 8/3/2013). I am also about re-register the plates for the car next week so the registration will be good till September 2015
I am selling my 2002 E46 M3 Coupe (build date 9/01) with manual 6-speed transmission. As I said above, the car has around 123,7xx miles on the body/chassis and transmission. The complete engine ("RMFD engine" - BMW part number 11-00-0-304-349) was replaced at 59,010 miles by BMW Fairfax in Northern Virginia (under the 100k mile / 6 year engine warranty) in March of 2007. I also paid out of pocket for a new clutch and flywheel pilot bearing at the same time. The car was stalling after the engine was replaced so the dealership also provided, under warranty, a new gear switch sensor and MAF air flow sensor. I have all paperwork to prove that this was done under warranty and at a BMW dealership. I performed a proper break-in on the engine and the oil was changed by BMW Fairfax on April 2007 per the BMW break-in specs.
I am the third owner of the car and have owned the car since November of 2006 (car had 55,3xx miles on it when I purchased it). The car has been in California since January 2011 but was on the East Coast (MD/VA) from 2001 to late 2011.
Including the engine replacement, I have all service records for the car and I have kept meticulous records of the service and modification history for the car. I have also documented all fuel fill-ups since March 2011 (as well monitored MPG). Recently the car has only been serviced at Platte Forme a.g. in El Monte, CA. Please see below for more specific recent maintenance items. All records will of course be included with the car upon sale.
Example of Fuel Mileage Tracking:
I want to be clear and honest: the car has been driven and tracked (driving events, never actual racing) and I most recently did two track days in the Spring of 2012 at Buttonwillow and Willow Springs in California. But I have also done preventative and proactive maintenance to ensure the car is always in excellent mechanical condition. I have not done any track events since the Spring of 2012.
Since the car is almost 12 years old now, I can't say the body is without imperfection (as **** as I am and I have tried to keep every panel without dings). The car has several minor dings and I was going to have them removed but they no longer bother me as they are not very noticeable. With that said, the driver-side corner of front bumper has been repaired by me (not professionally done) after I hit a curb. It's probably the most noticeable flaw on the body and I have always wanted to replace it with a OEM European bumper (or CSL) but never did since it is my daily driver.
Common E46 Problem Areas and My Resolutions:
- Cooling System: 3/10/2011- Majority of the cooling system was replaced with OEM parts at 100,450 miles. Specifically, the radiator, both hoses and thermostat were replaced. I did not replace the water pump as the water pump appeared to be replaced when I got the engine replaced. I DIYed this work with the help of another M3forum member. This was around 23k miles ago.
- Rear Subframe and Reinforcement: 6/6/2011 - Platte Forme a.g. repaired minor cracking on the subframe and installed the Turner Motorsport Reinforcement Kit (Mileage: 103850). This was around 20k miles ago.
- VANOS: 1/4/2012 - Valves were adjusted, VANOS filter was replaced and replaced cam gear bolts with updated spec bolts at 109,783. VANOS tabs showed no sign of any cracks and valve cover was incredibly clean. This was around 14k miles ago.
Please let me know if you have any questions around any other common E46 issues that I haven't addressed.
