Too bad the 03's are still going for more than I wanted to pay for. But I can wait. The four door thing is really for when we have a kid anyway...

AFAIK, the carbon build up problem doesn't happen with the 03's, and the 03's have DVD NAV as well.
As far as DVD nav goes, if you can find a nice '02 or earlier car for the right price, upgrading to DVD nav is a common and easily done. I beleive it runs about 1K?

Of course, maybe all M5's are affected, and the 03 owners are just not saying anything about it.
Ther eis also the VANOS issue that I believe BMW changed the design on 02 forward to avoid it.
And then there's the valve gasket leaking, but I forgot if that one is year range limited or not.
Anyway, I still need to do more research, but like I said, I got time before I really need a 4 door sedan.
Been an active M5board member for over three years. My understanding is the only change in M5 motors is the piston rings in the very early '00 models. I just read up on CBU, and the summary posted by a member said all model years are suseptible. It's a tough issue, because if your car gets it , the costs are high, even if BMWNA pitches in and helps. There is a fix to the current problem, but it doesn't mean that it won't come back. Do a search for "Carbon Buildup" on M5board, and check out the CBU Summary thread.
