Aleks@Alekshop is infamous around these parts
Update:

We looked at 997 and it looks like it can be done. The mirror can be modified and the main unit can be installed inside the headliner.

We are looking for a 996 to see what can be done. If any of you local guys want to stop by , we will be glad to take a look and report back to the rest of you.

Aleks.

Aleks,

What's the cost to implement this on a 997.2 car and how long does it take? TIA.

Can you do this one a Ferrari 360/430?

I'm local as well, car is already wired for V1 power to the rear view mirror

The base price to modify the mirror is $550. The installation of the V1 systems is $300 but can be lower or higher, depending on what the customer wants.

I am 99% positive it can be done, but we need to take a look at your car/cars to confirm it.

Thank you,

Aleks.

Guys,

We had somebody with 996 at the shop the other day and it looks like it can be done. If the owner of 996 decide to go for it, I'll post pictures from the installation here.

If somebody else want to volunteer please pm me.

Aleks.

Please post pics of where you place the main unit on the 996 and 997 once you have done the install. I have heard of installers mounting the main unit in the headliner, but would think this would have some effect on the sensitivity of the detection. I have installed a 997 modified rear view mirror with the V1 etched display and have put my main unit on the back deck with a home made stand and this setup has worked very well. It would be nice to have it completely concealed if it was known for certain that the detection would not be compromised in doing so. I know that the V1 manual specifically states that there should be no obstruction of the main unit through the forward and rear glass. What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Matt

First question, do you do a remote installation where you retain the factory arrows and everything, but relocate it to a different piece of plastic? I don't like to do high mountings of the radar lights, as you run the risk of a cop following you from behind seeing it lit up in the car. That's why I was just going to put the factory remote display inside my ashtray, like I've done in other cars. (I know you have to take your eyes of the road, so no lectures are needed.)

As to the effacacy of the V1, it's debatable whether certain installation locations impact the radar reception, but you can be 100% certain that any hidden location will eliminate the laser reception of the V1. Laser is optical, and needs line of sight. Period. Anyone saying otherwise is lying. Having said that, many people (including myself) would argue that by the time your laser alarm goes off, it's already too late. On rare occasions, the car next to you may be shot with the laser, and the detector can save you before you get hit. Rarely. If a cop hits you with laser, though, the gun is telling him to give you a ticket before the alarm even goes off on your detector. You just get a "free" light show, as you've already got a trip to the side of the road in your future.

What I have done and what is being talked about in this thread is having the remote display placed inside the rearview mirror with the arrows and LED warnings showing through an etched area of the mirror. IMO, I don't think a cop would notice the lights emitting from the rearview mirror and I have not heard of many complaints about the recommended high mounting of a radar detector.
