I thought about that, obviously way cheaper but I was worried about causing other issues. Anyone have experience with these?

Yes, the Gundo hack approach is definitely the cheapest solution if all you want is a deeper sound that is, from what I can gather from all the comments, very similar to PSE mufflers in "loud" mode. PSE is nice if you want to be able to make it quieter on demand, as well as if you want a Porsche factory option on the car. PSE mufflers are a little heavier (5 lb each?) than standard mufflers.
Good luck in your search. I just did it myself, so you may need to be patient to find what you want. Be sure to get tips too, as others don't fit the PSE mufflers.

thanks keninirvine,
I was hoping to reduce weight and increase some HP at first but settled on the PSE and the sport mode switch for better throttle response etc. They seem to be a reasonable way to gain performance that can be turned off when others drive the car for example.

PSE Headers & Vacuum Actuator Kit
Rockwood, I have the OEM headers off of a 2005 997.1 C2S that were on a factory PSE car, which flow better than the non-S headers. You can have them for $200 plus shipping. I also have a brand new Fabspeed Vacuum actuator Kit with remotes and control box. This kit came with my Fabspeed Valvetronic Exhaust, but since my car was a PSE car, I just tied them into the factory PSE setup and didn't need the kit. One thing that's nice about the Fabspeed kit is you can hook it up to use the remotes instead of having to change the switch panel on the dash and run the wiring behind there. They sell this for $495 (https://www.fabspeed.com/997_997SCarrera.html) - I'll take $350. If you buy both, I'll throw in shipping. You would only need the actuator kit if you go the vacuum controlled exhaust route, not for the Gundo Hack.
I can send you photos of the Headers tonight when I'm back home.
Let me know if you're interested.
