Tried holding the "1" button down till it flashes, then held the remote to the roof while holding both buttons down, and it doesn't seem to take. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You need to hold it against the righ A pillar where the transmiter is located.

Me to every time I push mine, my neighbors garage door opens..

Yes, point/hold your remote on the right side (passenger side on USA cars) and press the button. Mine programmed easily for multiple remotes.
