Where are the 12 speaker locations in Flying Spur? Adding a Subwoofer!
Where are the 12 speaker locations in Flying Spur? Adding a Subwoofer!
I've finally had my car almost two weeks and have come to some conclusions as to the direction I want to take with my audio. I have built many high end audiophile SQ type systems with Many AV sources, but think the only thing the 12 speaker system is definitely missing is a subwoofer that does anything but vibrate my leg as it rests on door as I drive. Other than that, I never once used the DVD player in my everyday driver Quattroporte, nor the garmin navigation. My '08 already has a usable Nav, connects and voice dials my iPhone5 and works phone from steering wheel and over radio, has factory backup camera, and has iPhone plug in center cup holder. Bottom line, the car has everything but DVD player already and that's fine, but the sound is lacking in subwoofer range and that is easy and really cheap starting point.
Some info I want to share that took forever to find is location and wiring schematics of factory amp. After much searching, I found it on a VW website for the Phaeton. Here is a link that describes function and polarity of all the wires in factory amps wiring harness. Also it gives the impedance of all the speakers. There is someone with a CGT in the thread showing his connections at factory harness.

I eventually want to swap out all the speakers and use a Bit One to clean up outputs. It also helps make the setup easier in future the fact there are 12 channels with each speaker wired individually from rear amp to doors.
My local shop has not specifically done a FS, so I want to find out as much info and design system carefully before proceeding. The addition of sub will just require taping woofer output wires on harness which the amp I plan to use (JLAudio HD750/1) accepts speaker level inputs. I think I may be able to fit amp in same compartment as starter battery.
Also, can anyone tell me location of 12 speakers?
1 tweeter in A pillar
2 speakers behind bottom grill of front door
2 speaker behind bottom grille of back door
This would be 5 per side, 10 total if I am correct. The VW Phaeton seems to have one speaker in back doors and a roughly 3" midrange at the handle of the front door, which I don't see.
The Naim system is a 15 speaker system that adds dual subwoofers, so that's 14 total with two subs added to 12, but where is other one? I see on pics that the back door in Naim system have a tweeter and mid toward top of doors, so where are all the rest in Naim system, is it just the 12 speaker system with 3 speakers added in new locations, or are many speakers positions changed?
Final question, the 12 speaker system in Phaeton were Blaupunkt speakers, mostly 3.5 ohm and 2 ohm 6.5" woofers. Are the Bentley speakers same brand and impedance? Also, has anyone tried to upgrade factory speakers with aftermarket 4 ohm speakers keeping factory amp?

I found a brochure from NAIM for Bentley systems that shows placement and type of each speaker.

Still looking for info on 12 speaker system.

After much searching and looking at used door panels on eBay, It looks like their are a woofer and midrange behind front door bottom range, tweeters in front A pillars, and 3 speakers in back doors, a tweeter and mid behind top grill and woofer behind bottom grille.
Now that I'm pretty set with speaker locations, the amp wiring schematics I found for Phaeton on what should be same amp, may be a little off on outputs because it seems the phaeton 12 speaker system has 4 speakers in front (3 door and 1 in A pillar) and 2 speakers in back doors as opposed to 3 in front, 3 in back for bentley.
The biggest difference is that in Phaeton, the fronts 4 speakers are split tweet, mid range, mid bass, woofer. And the back midrange and midbass.
The Bentley should be 3 ways, tweet, mid, woofer.
