Spark plugs change

Spark plugs change
Dear All,
I took my GTC to a bentley specialist before buying it.
He is telling me it would potentially be wise to change the spark plugs as we have no way of knowing if they have been changed or not. The engine is running very smoothly and according to the specialist the car has been superbly looked after ( and it shows) so we are both not 100% sure if doing it or not.
The car is a 2008 with 20k miles and as I understand the spark plugs should be changed after 40,000 miles but time ( change every 4 years) is a consideration as well.
The cost of changing them is about $ 1,000 as it involves quite a bit of work to get to the spark plugs.
Any suggestions?
If I don't change them, can I seriously damage the engine?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Regards

Personally, I feel they should be fine until 40k miles. If they had problems the engine would probably stumble and then trigger a warning light. The way these modern engines operate you should be fine to 50k (perhaps more) and since the spark plugs only have 20k miles, you should be fine imho.
If you do not change them I can't see why any damage could happen if one fails. The engine itself is pretty bulletproof. It is the turbo /air lines that tend to go and still no damage, just a very large repair bill to remove the engine to fix it.

The engine is running very smoothly, so will keep it running as it is.
