Let's Talk Code Readers
I got both the Autel MaxiDAS 708 and RossTech and liking the RossTech much better. Rosstech has all help menus and documentation what all settings are while the MaxiDAS not.

Check out the Hyper TOUGH HT309 at Walmart for about $20. which worked great on my wife's Fiat 500, but I have not checked it out on my Bentley yet.
Is the Data Link Connector easily accessed on the 2009 Bentley Continental GTC?

....ok...I typing this on my Mac, but I have in front of me the Windows 10 Lenovo ($360 Amazon) The Autel MaxiDiag Elite User's Manual, The Autel Reader, the CD (Update App.,Print Services, Manuals...$175) a Four (4) foot cable and the computer connection wire...I am going to try doing this myself (without wife's help)...yesterday I was able to register on line with Autel...Let's see how it goes...JimB
OMG JIM,
Please be careful, don't knock SF off the power grid......

....I didn't know difference between registering with Autel (yesterday) and registering reader with all confusing i.d's and passwords...believe got it done...believe I updated...now going down to Volvo to find OBD and try out...haven't yet read nice instruction book...that's last resort...JimB
....nothing like an old dog trying to learn a new trick...I asked moderator to correct my age to 85...I wish I was 72...anyhow it's all good...
....just a side note to ExSF...with this Model Autel 802 you should have Windows computer in order to register the unit and download latest software...
....anyhow, I got the unit registered and updated...hooked it up to the Volvo...with some fiddling around got unit to read and identify the Vin number of car...but it stuck there...an hour later I got the instruction book (always last resort)...I Quote...Pg22...the scan tool will automatic read car Vin Code and ask you to confirm if ECU responds...if ECU does not, it will turn to manual mode....there is where I was stuck...when I saw the correct Vin I was perplexed by unit showing manual entry screen...will punch in manually later...JimB

....ok...got the Windows 10 and Autel 802 up and running...registered and updated the reader...tried it out on 2009 Volvo. One hour later still trying. The Volvo Data Link Connector (DLC) is very accessible by left knee, under dash. Plugged in the Autel. Happy, it lite right up...Six (6) panels appear on Main Screen. OBD2V1.10, (Manual says V1.10)(I did note what version actually showed on reader) EPD (ElectricParkBrake) ,Scan,Oil,SetUp,Playback. The reader cycled through SAE91850pwm, KWP2000,ISO9141-2,CAN-Fast/Slow and KWP2000. It cycled 3 or 4 times then said FAILED TO Connect. After an hour I gave it a rest. Called Autel. A very helpful Specialist reformatted the Card and updated everything. This was late Friday. Net result, exactly same Failure to Connect...any ideas out there. The Specialist will not be available till Monday...JimB

Oh Well, just another BBLM (Bush League Beginner Mistake) In the Autel set up instruction it states, power for tool "usually" by the car DLC (cable connection)...these instructions are not written by an English First Language person...
....My mistake is when I plugged tool in the screen lite up, but tool would not function...today I turned on ignition and all sorts of functions became available...
Yesterday the Autel Specialist (who was extremely nice and patient) never mentioned turning
the ignition on first...Now I have to learn the significance of all the readouts...JimB

....Autel help has disappeared...the problem seems to be they have a problem with Toyota/Lexus....one of their very knowledgeable people set my system up remotely...he could not have been more helpful....I clearly told him my cars...Volvo, Lexus and Bentley...what turned up was Bentley, Volvo and VW....when I inquired...no reply
No Matter what the situation is, they should be up front...
The DCL (Data Link Connector) on Volvo is right up front like it should be. (2009 C30) great little car I drive 95% of time. (Just put 4 tires, and align $1000)
Now the Lexus has the DLC well hidden...It took me 3 tries and much research to find it...
I used a mirror and good light to spot it up under dash cover with a black cover over DCL...clearly Toyota is not encouraging DIY work....Next the 10Speed

....Oh Well...That's life in the Big City...The Autel 802 I had was a dud...after more than five (5) hours on phone and computer with Autel Service Specialist (very helpful but not effective) the thing would not work on the 2009 Volvo C30....the Autel Specialist in New York changed a 1000 things but it all added up to Zero...never got to try it on the Lexus or Bentley...that's the great thing about Amazon...shipped it out yesterday...credit immediately back on the account...JimB Back at square one, except now have a Windows 10 Laptop...
....Sunday March 12th 2017 1:50am SF...really back to square one...a few people who bought Autel MD802 wrote in that Autel software corrupted their computer...I had bought a new Windows 10 Laptop to be used only with the Autel...Yes the new Lenovo Lap top got infected with malicious malware (or whatever the correct term) Explained all to Amazon, they said ship it back. Sent the computer out yesterday, Amazon immediately credited my account...you can't ask for better than that. I'm going to give the Code Reader thing a rest...may revisit the whole trip later...JimB
Bumping this up 5 years later. Best basic current avail scanner that doesn’t need laptop device. Just a basic scanner to reset codes and run diagnostic. Any ideas - suggestions

I highly endorse the Ross Tech, it works good, lasts a long time.
If you don't have Parallels, you might want to think about it. I don't have a lot of computer stuff that needs Windows, but there are some that I can't live without.
