Let's Talk Code Readers
Sorry to be a bummer, but "use a laptop" is the right answer ;(
bummer…….
Spur still has extended warranties so if I get the check engine lights or a code I guess it’s off to dealer then
Was hoping there was just a handheld device that would explain and then be able to clear codes

Quick eBay search showed this, so I think what you want is possible.

This one is UK.
Still think you really want the Ross Tech, unless you have a cross-referenced list of codes.
If all you want to do is reset the master light, then this would do it, I imagine, but it'll probably come back on again

Agreed RT vcds👍 is the best.
However, the attached scanner will check and clear all modules. On early B's it will reveal the secret 4 digit key code too.
However, it is a clone and no directions. The system mimics Ross Tech vcds without the support or intuitive nature of the Ross Tech. The unit is handheld and does not require a laptop. There are other similar units as well sold online.
There are overviews for the xtool vag 401 on some of the Audi and Volkswagen forums. There are also specific online reviews of the xtool vag 401 for further evaluation.
This is a suggestion not an endorsement.
