Tire rotation & life
Tire rotation & life
Rotated my tires today. Normally I like to cross them. Front left to right rear, etc. For some reason the owners manual says not to do that and to keep them on the same side.
Since the PZeros have an "outside" marked, the tread pattern on one side of the car is rolling the opposite of the pattern on the other side. If you always keep the tires on the same side that will continue to be the case. Seems to me the tires should be swapped side to side occasionally.
Anyone know why they want to keep them on the same side?
BTW in case you haven't noticed, the owners manual says don't run on tires over 6 years old. Previous research came up with the metric of 7 years. Nevertheless, in case you don't know tires can rot from the inside and let loose at highway speed. That happened to me in my '63 Corvette.
Cars that don't get driven often can have perfect looking tread and no cracking in the rubber but still be a hazard.
I tried to buy a 9000 mile 2008 from an exotic car dealer and I insisted new tires come with the deal. No dice. Eventually they sold the car to someone who probably does not know they are driving a time bomb. I'm certain the dealer didn't mention it.

No, there is no direction of rotation arrow on the tires. Just the word "outside". If they were directional it would be obvious why you can't move them to another side. But in this case there is no obvious reason.
....without getting too deep into weeds...the Original Perrelli's are only good for 12 to 15,000 miles depending on driving habits and keeping proper inflation...if they say don't rotate...so be it....if you really want to get perplexed...the dealer here recommends that if one of four tires is damaged, they replace all 4...I knew they were carrying too far when they would not plug a perfectly good tire...I guess it all has to do with Legal Liability...at normal speeds, plug can do no harm...at 150mph perhaps different story...
Maybe some dealers know a mug when they see one. They are salesmen!
I've currently got between 25,000 and 30,000 on my Pirelli P Zero's with a good mix of driving, plenty of full power runs up my own 1/4 mile drive taking friends for a 0-80 blast and even up to 165mph a few times on another stretch of road.
They will need changing later this year, most likely September when the service is due.
Where some people get their ideas from beggars belief.

...it's all a matter of personal preference, I think it's false economy and dangerous to ride on the last 20% of tire life...if you actually get 25-30,000 usage, lot's of luck...have a new set of Perrelli's on the Volvo C30, put them all on at 34,000 because of one bad tire...but the other day on Cal 395 at 3am in middle of desert, tooled along at 100, with full confidence...I have a tire depth gauge right here in front of me, it's only accurate way to check out how much tread left...I sure would like to see your's at 20,000...

....I guess you are not familiar with California driving habits, that is understandable....on our extensive Freeway system that criss crosses the State the speed limit varies depending on location, some areas 65 and some 75. Depending on time of day, traffic generally moves at 80...395 runs North and South, some parts through Desert. It is a well paved road with visibility for miles....I have not had a moving traffic Violation in over 50 years...

Please identify where the posted limit is 75 MPH...Thanks.

Traffic speed enforcement is another matter entirely...
....I bow to your superior knowledge of California Legal Speed Limits....leaving for Las Vegas soon....perhaps I was thinking of I-15 into Nevada....at any rate your concern for adherence to posted Speed Limits on this Forum is singularly admirable....the difference in gas consumption at 100 versus 70 is noteworthy...in the 5 cylinder Volvo C30 it is cut in half...
....this may be OT...but in a way it's not...here in San Francisco we have an area called The Tenderloin, the unspoken underbelly of the richest City in the Country. All SRO Hotels, Missions, Homeless and Unfortunates...
....About a month ago I was there and heard an awful loud angry voice furor. Two black men were in each others faces. The younger man was in full Camo and very buff. The instigator was 10 years older and obviously on crack. This person was literally one foot away from the other and calling every obscenity in the book. There was a large crowd. The young man was just saying...get out of here...get out of here. He had his dog-tags in his mouth...This was an obvious bad situation and it went on for 10 minutes...I felt the young man was reaching the end of his endurance so I stepped in, put my arms around his shoulders and walked him across the street...I said, you are a real man displaying tremendous discipline...where did you get your training...Ranger, POW Training School...
