There is a wealth of information on the HMSL [high mounted stop lamp] / (3rd brake light) here on the forum. Use the search function.

The reason I ask is that I was told it was because I was not using a battery tender. Seemed like an odd answer as I've been driving the car daily

It is true that you can get some strange errors if your batteries are low. However, given that you drive the car daily, this seems unlikely (unless your batteries are worn out or your alternator is faulty).

Hmmm, I get the same warning once every month or so. Whenever I haven't driven the car for a week or so (which is almost every week), the first start up, I sometimes get the icon/warning on the readout between the gauges. Seems to go away each time after no more than 1-2 minutes of driving. Rear Brake light is working/lights up fine, regardless of the warning.

Will try using the battery tender to see if the low-batt condition might be the culprit. Let me know what you find out and I'll do the same.

reporting in... I do think my intermittent case is a battery related item. Observations over the past two weeks are that when driven daily/battery charged, no problems. After sitting for the past 8 days I got the problem again and went away after less than a minute of the car being on. Light itself works no problem, regardless of the dash warning.

Thanks for the update. A battery tender (e.g. CTEK) will solve most battery issues. The original advice you were given may be the best solution.

What original advice was I given? Perhaps you are confusing me with the OP?

You are correct. I did make that assumption. At this stage in life, I am easily confused.
