This is the license plate surround that came on my new (to me) 2005 Continental. Looks like the previous (interim) owner just drilled through the bumper to install the plate that came on the car when I got it. The plate extended a half inch below the surround when I got it. It covers up the month and year sticker on the new plate I just got for it. Suggestions?
I can't honestly see how to get this thing off. The bottom two "screw slots" have nothing in them (one is missing) and there is no hole behind either of them. The top ones look like they would unscrew but in fact they are flush with the surround and have so far resisted my efforts to "pry" them out. I assume that what looks like a license plate light in the upper center of the surround is not really, but I have no idea what it actually is (an aftermarket backup camera? I have no idea). Suggestions and information on whether I should or should not continue to try to remove it would be appreciated!
Hello, and welcome aboard,
Yes, that looks like an aftermarket RVC frame, most likely you will have to reach up behind the bumper to remove the nuts that attached to the flush mount bolts you are trying to pry off.
Welcome to the board. I take it the camera doesn’t work. You do have the factory radio in there right? When you take that frame off it will be a wire going into the bumper to the front towards the radio. Is that something you think you would want to retain? If so have a good shop look at it to see about installing a newer better camera. If the factory radio is still in there I would guess they have some type of video interface connected to it.
I think you guys are right on the money, thanks for the help. Looks like my license plate surround is an earlier version of a JPP Backup Camera model currently available on Amazon for less than $30. Has to be a Chinese product, no technical information seems to be available at all---I've looked.
To answer your question, I'm pretty sure I have an original radio and amazingly this system is still working pretty well. All I was looking to do originally was install my new license plate; it looks now like I may have a little more on the table. I'll get under there tomorrow and see what the anchor nuts and hardware look like. May have to order a new one just to get all the hardware I need.
Seriously, thanks for the help. These are the kinds of things that make affinity group forums so valuable. You'd never find this kind of help or information anywhere else: Not factory, not dealer installed, non-standard. Very helpful, guys...
