I learned also during my rebuild that the locking clip is just the first step of removing the wires from a connector, next you need to depress/flatten the 2 tabs on either side as shown in the video below, as I did not have the pin tool at the moment, I just used a very small flat head screwdriver, like eyeglass repair kits have.
