Slam panel?

The what looks like pressed steel covering the bonnet latches, held in by the T-27 torx bolts. It is just what it seems? No reason not to whip it off, rub it back and satin black it?

No reason at all.
In my case the torx bolts were looking shabby so I replaced them with stainless which I etch primed and dusted with ToughBlack.
