Check Engine light but no fault codes

Hi all,

I recently bought 08 Flying Spur with 67tkm and been very happy with it. I did my pre purchase research mainly on based on the information found on this forum and thank you for that.

Car feels pretty much like new car in and out but check engine light comes on occasionally. I have read the codes with generic reader and no fault codes. I also had minor service done at independent who was unable to find anything wrong. However it got me thinking if there is a problem building up which should be addressed.

Does anyone have had any similar issue? Any leads where to start digging for the cause? or should I just ignore it until the fault codes actually pop up.

Also I’m based in Dubai so any recommendations for good independent are welcome. In general the garages over here are either bad or very bad. I have used mine for many years mainly for M bmws and AMG mercs but they are not Bentley specialists.

Thanks

Welcome vmk,

A proper scan starts with the right equipment!👍 Unfortunately a generic scanner only evaluates generic codes. Ross Tech vcds is what one needs for deep diagnosis. Attached is a list of Ross Tech global distributors. This is the preferred software by fellow members. Yes there are inexpensive clones out there that work. However the learning curve is not straightforward regarding cloned analyzers.

Thanks very much. I have ordered Ross Tech scanner and as soon as it arrives I will dig further. Currently there has been no check engine light for a week and over 500kms.

Error codes

while waiting for the Ross Tech to arrive I took the car to a garage I know well for scan. This is what came up. Any suggestions where to start digging for the fault?

Thanks

The attached scan was a good start. Now delete the codes and drive the car for a couple days and rescan. Also find someone to perform a dynamic load test on the batteries. Sometimes weak batteries cause spurious trouble codes. Anyway some of the codes may be old and no longer pertinent.

Based on the scan, the car has misfires which might explain the occasional check engine light. Also the exhaust temperature sensor is complaining.

In conclusion dynamic load test the batteries, delete codes, drive the car a couple days and rescan. Please post the results of the second scan once you have your Ross Tech VCDS.

Just an update here. It was the vacuum hoses that gave up and probably caused much of the issues. Hoses fixed among other things like suspension bushes and engine mounts. Obviously full service with spark plugs and transmission oil.

I was kind of ready to call it a day with gen1 Bentley and was seriously looking at 2016 S63 AMG but I guess I give this another chance as it feels like brand new car now

It seems a couple of simple items can drive the diagnostics nutso; a vacuum leak and low batteries.

Seems like you go the vacuum leak one.

I got the low battery one after letting my battery absolutely die (long and unpleasant story) and it took a week after for the codes to finally settle down after being initially reset. Weird.

I really like my Bentley, but gotta admit, it has been a chore lately, although none of it was the car's fault, all mine.
