W12 making chain rattling sound? Any ideas?

I have a 2018 Bentayga W12 with 14k miles. The engine makes an unusual ticking sound. No check engine light. No noticeable issues with performance. I can just faintly hear the sound from inside the cabin while I’m driving and it seems off to me. Inside the cabin while driving it sounds like a chain rattling noise, but with the hood open stationary, it sounds more like a bunch of crickets. Here's a quick video clip. You’ll hear normal engine sound for the few first seconds, then you’ll hear the fast ticking start. It is almost always present. It was unusual that it was absent when I started the video, which is why I started recording there. And then the noise started again. Any idea what might be causing this noise? It's not the lifters, is it? Because that's going to be big money? Switching from the right side of the engine to the left and it sounded fairly uniform and coming from the engine as a whole -- I couldn't differentiate it coming from just one side versus the other.

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert on that engine, but the cams are chain driven. I would not drive it and have it towed to some folks who know that engine.

Let us know,
Robert

lol. It doesn’t even have a check engine light. That would be akin to landing an airplane on a highway just because you heard a strange noise, despite all engine indicators showing nominal.

Lights fail, circuits fail. Don't rely too much on the electronics. You have two good sensors on either side of your head that are telling you something is wrong.

Some of us were diagnosing engine problems when there were only basic gauges and lights. Even then we knew not trust a warning light. We called them idiot lights..

Please let us know what you find,
Robert

Actually, no, it is not akin at all, what Robob stated is actually very sound advice.
Not to be rude, but, your comment of a $5 lube on some chain that doesn't exist, is the only thing that warrants an "LOL"... seriously, what would you be thinking is chain driven to require a lube like a bicycle chain, the engine on the other hand has quite a few chains driving internals inside, and they are all lubed by the engine oil.
I would not be driving the vehicle at all if it was a timing chain or oil pump chain sound.

Maybe you could upload a video of the sound.

Hear, hear Johnny and Robob. Odd mechanical noises are often the prelude to catastrophic failure and should NEVER be taken lightly.

As Johnny suggests, a video upload of the sound would be good. At the very least It could used by other members with a similar noise in the future.

My tensioner when it was failing sounded like a rattling and knocking. I thought it was a loose timing chain. I replaced the tensioner and a new belt and it went away. 09gt 51k

It just dawned on me. The sound sounds exactly like the smoke monster from LOST. Almost like a really fast typewriter. Maybe that’s what’s in my engine: the smoke monster from LOST.

TBH that clip was a bit short.. can you move from one side of the engine to the other. Then one a little further away. from the engine.

Hello @981WC ,
As Frank stated, any update ?

In listening to the short video, is it possible that the sound has something to do with the variable displacement that the Bentayga has, or could it be one of the HPFP's (high pressure fuel pump), as the engine has both direct injection and port injection, or it could also be one of the direct injectors, as they would make a louder mechanical sound compared to the very slight tick of a port injector.

Johnny

Hello. I have a same 2018 bentayga and same noise. The noise is small level in car room but continues during driving. Sometimes noise disaapear but appear again repeatedly. My mechanic guess that noise aroused from valve lifter(tappet). Also he recommended liquimoly hydraulic valve lifter additive. Then I bought 4 bottle(300ml) at yesterday and I will 2 bottle put in the engine of bentayga at tomorrow. I will tell you the result later. Keep in toutch.

The dealer took a look and said it’s the HPFP and is normal. Shocks me that such a noise could be normal on a Bentley given you hear it inside the cabin as you drive, but shucks what do I know.

Then again I can’t say I fully trust the dealer because I paid them an ungodly amount to do a coolant flush and the day after I got the car back it threw a low coolant warning. I checked under the hood and sure enough they grossly underfilled it. Made me wonder if they even did the flush properly and run the engine to flush the coolant through.
